Vintage Ludwig Black Beauty Last viewed: 11 minutes ago

Hey folks... I haven't posted in awhile, but I just added this 5x14 Deluxe 10 lug to my drum collection. It has the 12 leaf floral pattern and "pat pend" on the strainer. I have a few questions.

(1) According to The Ludwig book, the drum would be placed around 1926-28...correct? Anything else to narrow down the date?

(2) I question if the butt plate is original, shouldn't it also be the gold deluxe plating?

(3) I plan on removing the original clips for safe-keeping and replacing with new brass ones for playing. I see some new ones on ebay for about $4.50 ea. (20 of em really add up) Are there outlets for these that are a bit more economical?

Some background on the drum. My friend found this back in 07 in a Salvation Army store for $75 (yep, don't give up hope of finding gems out in your travels) I paid fair mkt value for the drum. From what I see, the only issues are 2 non original clips and the questionable butt plate. The drum sounds great... a keeper!

Thanks!

I'm sure Mike will weigh in with the correct info at some point. I thought they went to the flower pattern a bit later than 1926, maybe 28 or 9? The drums were available with chrome plated parts, they weren't all art gold. Great find, nice looking drum!

From my studies and with help from John Aldridge I would say pre-1929...I can get you the collar hooks and I can have them copper plated, polished and gold lacquered to match the original hardware parts, I can also do the same with the butt plate....feel free to call me at: 650-595-2022 or email me at: mike@curottodrums.com
