Vintage and modern drums Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Some of us have touched on the subject of owning both vintage and modern drumsets. For those of you who have substantial recording experience, do you generally prefer having both modern and vintage drums in order to have different sound options? I know there will always be some purists that indicate only use vintage and so on. Let's discuss.

My Dw collector series never saw a studio, my Vintage kits and Ludwig 6 ply kits have most certainly seen the studio.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I`ll never understand this question when used in contex with a studio. Todays` direct mics. and software can make your drum antiquated or modern or sound anything.

When I mic`d my drums outside for the first time, I had no idea ya had to put them through a pre-amp, compressor, short cables and then the PA. All that changed the way you hear them !!

Now,.. play`n in the garrage, unplugged,... I can clearly understand the questions` concern !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

+1 - well-said! Today's digital recording equipment has made vintage/modern almost a moot point. The last time I recorded, I didn't sound like myself after mix-down. I asked the engineer why my drums sounded so 'mechanical/metronome-like' and he told me he processed my part through some software that digitizes the tempo. It completely altered not only the sound of my drums, it didn't sound like 'me' that was playing. We had a Godawful dispute/discussion about it. Those monkeys can make you sound like a Bach trumpet if they want to. Direct mic'ing of an entire room or kit is different. But what they do with it afterwards can change it beyond all recognition.

Modern/vintage? Moot point with computer/digital recording.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Amen!

I have a strong inkling ... judging by the rapidity of thread creation and the Dada-esque subject approach ... that there is a tympanotriba crudus at work here. Nothing wrong with it, mind you. Just seem to be rehashing all that was and is. The absurdity of known and the norm I would venture is in the drivers seat.

Hmmm...some good points. Although I wonder why big studio guys don't just go in with cheap dumpy drums...if the technology changes the sound that much. Lol... On a serious note, I see the point about the fact that modern sound equipment can have a huge impact on sound created...

From my own experience in recording it ALL has to do with the engineer. not the drums/drummer. they have done A LOT to take out any small amount of individuality or originality a drummer personally has.. i've played a 400 dollar tama kit and it sounded better than a Ludwig Keystone. all has to do with the engineer. Good engineer = Good sound. if you can get someone who is very knowledgeable about actual drum tone instead of butchering your drums with programs you are a VERY lucky person.

That's exactly the opposite story as me. My DWs are the kit I take in to the studio, and the vintage Ludwigs stay home. I have recorded the Ludwigs before, and they sound great. I'm defintely going to use them on my upcoming solo project.

I was working for a studio that only wanted me to bring in my DWs. In retrospect, I suspected that maybe that was the reason they were hiring me. They closed down, so whatever...

Little Stew played the lower line Imperialstars for quite a stretch. There are many other examples of this. It is what it is.

I've heard good things about DW. I've always been a Yamaha maple guy, when it comes to modern gear, but hats off to DW...they build some nice drums.
