Top Hat and Cane Ludwig Toms Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I'm very new here, been drumming since the 60s. Along the way I've been through some sets and left one Gretsch set behind in Iowa because I didn't have room in the car for two sets when I transferred colleges. Kept the cymbals of course they were small enough. :)

My first set is still with me, a Ludwig Super Classic, black pearl. It's been around the block and has all the signs of being used, but not abused. (not by me at least) Some jackass did burn a hole in the bass at a jam session. What I get for lending my drums out for open stage at a place I managed in the 70s.

However the old "funny looking" tom toms that I picked up about 30 years ago, I've been keeping, in hopes of some day finding the matching bass drum. HA! Until last week I didn't know they were from the 40s.

Still have the era skin heads on them, I don't remember the floor tom having any legs. But the question is at the moment, is there any market for parts and pieces? That would be the two individual tom toms?

Right now they are in storage and I may have to dig through snow and try to get the door open, then up top of 20 feet deep of "stuff". I know exactly where they are, but getting them down is another issue.

If someone says it's an interesting project, I'll go get them and take some photos. If they are just some "old drums" I can wait until April. Three more months after 30 years doesn't seem like a long time.

You noticed the Wisconsin part right? Laughing H

This all started when I was going to try to identify my Ludwigs and see when they were really made. I don't know if the drum store had a back warehouse full of them and made sets from pieces or what. I know they have white inside the shells. Anyway, that led me to this site.

Somehow I was looking at old finishes and there they were, the funny old drums that I've been dragging around all this time. I thought it would be a hoot to get a big old wooden bass drum and play them with the band. Now I'm glad I didn't bugger them up making the old looking set.

Maybe I'll find the all wood Leedy drum with wooden arms that held the rims over the heads. Then lever arms to wooden rings inside that pushed up to create tension. Pretty strange?

Actually those were made by WFL, not Leedy. That was the WWII era Victorious series of drums you are thinking of and they are quite rare and valuable nowadays....

I believe that cane and hat wrap to be highly collectable from what I have seen on EBAY (sorry if I offended anyone saying that dirty word). If you google top hat and cane Ludwig's, you will see plenty of examples of this. I found one link to a complete set selling for 15,000 dollars, buy it now but don't know how that went for that guy. here is the linkhttp://global.ebay.com/VINTAGE_1940_LUDWIG_TOP_HAT_AND_CANE_DRUM_SET_4_PIECE/320464059434/item

I would not part out anything that is serviceable and if restoration is not your thing, someone somewhere will most assuredly take those off your hands for their own project. I would make sure you do plenty of research to make sure you get what those are worth though.

have a wonderful evening

Mike probably wants them, heh. :)

Hey Mike, I know this French guy from here in Portland where I work and

we both play drums so we got to shootin' the crap about drums and rare wraps and so on and turns out I guess he sold you a 1920's Rainbow Pearl

tube lug snare! Kind of funny I guess, he was really bummed when I told

him how valuable it is today and that there are pictures of it in The Ludwig Book...

Found it!!
