Hey Robyn,

The battleship lugs appeared in the early 70s, possibly late 60s. You probably know already that that indicates Pearl (made). Chances are those are the thicker 6 or 9 ply shells. WHAT IS THAT - is that a wrap on those blue drums, or some kind of ________?? I believe it would be a safe buy for about 150, but no more than that.....depends on what it includes and also what shells are under that blue. We know what the battleships came on, but that is not conclusive about those shells.....remember the re-wrapped kit that turned out to be a Gretsch round-badge? So, ask for some pics of the interiors of the shells....they can even shoot a pic through a vent hole.

jccab, WOW those are some beautiful Presidents! That was the deal of a lifetime - don't see that too often at any price. Ya gotta love vintage drums that are affordable! I'm with ya right there - I love the underdog, especially when it can sound like a million bucks when you know what you are doing. Shoot - if I decided to acquire livestock, I would probably buy a donkey! Of course there is some special-ness to me considering Jesus rode in on one.

A couple more observations. The lugs on the BD and FT are not battleship. I would bet those are Star made, based on the FT leg mounts. Also, notice the inlays on the hoops - blue onyx. Beware - you may discover some very desirable wrap under that blue stuff (whatever it is -as that does not look like standard blue sparkle or glass glitter necessarily....possible a re-wrap using the sparkledrumwraps product.

If I would have to choose between Accent and Pearl Export I would definitely go for Export. Much better hardware, bearing cut, generally quality of assembly.

For the difference of 50$ between 'em there's nothing to consider.

Export is a beginners set with semi pro quality.

John, I think the guys at Music go Round were hung over when they valued the kit. It was really dirty and had a little surface rust but cleaned up very nice.

Robyn, drummerjohn333 is correct, the weird blue drms could be hiding something really good under that,, stuff. I think it would be prefectly fine to go to the G.C. and ask to remove a head/ hoop then go one step further and remove a lug. Then you could see whats under there, if anything. It could be the original wrap as well.

If it is a cool wrap then save the tydye for later. For the tydye, I would look for a kit with really bad wrap. Remove the wrap down to bare wood. Glue the cloth to the shell using some sort of fabric adhesive ( have to think about that one) then spray a coat of clear finish over them. If you want the hardware black you could scuff it up and spray paint. Look on c/l for some cheep drums, I have scored big in Peoria/Pekin area, only 90 miles soulth of me.

Whatever you do, keep us posted.

They are an entry level drum set as you know. Eventually someone who actually owns one will chime in. I see Accents all the time on craigs list for sale and they seem to go for about 200- 500 depending on the included hardware and cymbals. If you watch craigs list you will see that good deals on much better quality drums pop up from time to time for the same amount of money. Do you have a Music-go-round store nearby? I found a killer Pearl President kit in red oyster pearl , matching 10 lug snare for 160.00 one time. Member Billnvick told me to grab it, and I did. That is when Bill and I beacme good freinds. He was right, its a beauty and sounds really nice, what a deal!So if your looking for a second kit be patient and a good deal will come your way.Take a look at the Pearls >

Now THAT's a gorgeous kit. Tip your hat to BillnVick for the recommendation.

I'm still waiting to stumble across a deal like that or to wander into some old abandoned warehouse to find a kit stashed away. Abandoned and full of dust and grime. Only to bring it back to life and celebrate Violin

Just noticed - jccab's President....even has BD and Sn that are 10 LUG! What a find!

Meanwhile - the plot thickens......as Robyn64's prospect Sn also is 10 LUG.....and they are nowhere to be found on the GC site - looks like somebody pulled the trigger.......

looking for the update!

John. If you are talking bout the blue kit i got a reply from gc about it. They said that kitwas somebodys fun kit that they had rewrapped andthat the desciption on the kit was wrong for it and they would be changing it so that may be why it is not listed. I am very interested to see its new listing. I think i may be interested in buying it too, we will see. I will update this thread as i know more. Thanks for your interests

Yes it will be interesting to see what they wrapped it in. Looks like carpet almost. This could be a perfect canidate for your tydye project, depending on what they used to glue the weird wrap on with.

Let us know!

UPDATE: i'm buying the blue kit i posted in an above post. been talking to the guys at gc, they took 100$ off the price for me. Clapping Happy2

i asked about the wrap on the drums and adam says he would call it some kind of astro turf, but he's not exactly sure what it is. he also says he thinks it can be removed fairly easily, we hope. am waiting on a call back from adam with a final quote and then will get the ball rolling on this. so will keep this updated and will also do a thread of the restoration of the kit. hand tight and bare with me wez gonna have some fun. lol.
