Talk to me about toms on a snare stand

Loading...

I've never put a rack tom on a snare stand, but I'm thinking about giving it a try.

Couple of Qs: Does the tom resonate more? Less? Same? What stand? How do you get it far enough the the right without the stand hitting the bass?

Pictures?

random picture - not my drums - looks like quite a bit of real estate between the rack tom and floor tom.

Thanks

Usually, more resonance is evident on a snare stand as opposed to an arm mount. When using a snare stand it is important not to over-tighten the clamping arms.

Personally, I never liked the way that looked....a tom on a snare stand.

Dino Danelli was the only guy to make that look good!!!

If you have the drum tuned low to medium, a snare stand will stifle the sound of the drum. If it's tuned medium to high, it will resonate just fine. If you're going for a "rock tuning", it's best to get a RIMS-style mount on your tom, as it will allow the drum to fully resonate at a lower tuning.

I have always used a stand for my toms. I play them low, and could never get them into position the way I like them using a bass drum mount. I also hate the way they wobble when hanging off of a cymbal stand. That picture above is misleading. It's not the best angle, and if you use a stand that has a smaller footprint, you can get the tom in pretty close.

While a snare stand CAN choke a tom, it doesn't HAVE to. For starters, do not tighten the snare basket arms all of the way. Replace the tips of the arms with surgical tubing. Buy a Pearl snare stand that has arm tips that act like Pearl ISO floor tom feet. Let the tom rest on the very tips of the arms instead of placing it fully in the basket.

In any case, not all toms are going to sound the same way on a snare stand, so you may need to experiment a little bit. IMO, I think the surgical tubing is the best way to go.

I like my toms low also so any bass bigger than a 20" I use a snare stand.

Very cool set-up. Love the black/gold duco.

In my opinion it makes no difference to the sound at all..It's no different to having your snare drum on a stand. The only downsides are with positioning of the tom & lugging an extra stand. On the plus side it frees your BD of extra luggage.

My first new Slingerland kit was a "Jet" 20N kit (1968) and came with a 12"

Hanging? no? ..Standing.. tom on a snare stand.. I got used to that set up so it was never an issue. However that kit was a 20" BD, I do concede that it may be somewhat awkward with the extra height of a larger BD.

But sound ..no different..

Cheers

I put a Gauger Flex Frame on my Slingy and love it. Increased resonance immediately and it's very unobtrusive.

You might try some plastic/rubber tubing where the basket meets the hoops as shown here to increase resonance.
