Some wore-out drums! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

This is my Dad's Slingerland/WFL shell pack he currently gigs with since the early 60's, (he also uses two 1960's Slingerland cymbal stands & a old Luddy 1123 Hi-Hat). He's the original owner of the wmp 13" & 16" toms, dated Jan 1962. He bought the silver badge 22" WFL bass wmp 2nd hand around the same time. 50+ years of use, 2-3 times a month have taken it's toll on these dudes. Dad removed the bottom heads & cut-out the frt bass head so that he could pack all three drums in one case! I thought I was gonna do the same clean & polish job on these guys like I did for his snare, (see http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=23712 ), but the wraps are too far gone for that. Not to mention some needed re-ring work, beat-up lugs & rims... So, before I restore 'em I thought I'd put up some "before" pics and post the progress on this thread. I'm replacing the WFL with a Sligerland 24" 3 ply shell and single Set-o-matic assembly I aquired from a forum member. Just gonna leave the WFL as-is for prosperity!

Dad didn't like where the previous owner put the cymbal mount so he switched it with a bass lug! The crater in the shell is from when the tom mount is folded down.

Dad installed the Rogers Swiv-o-matic to hang his snare. Note no bottom tom head.

These spur mounts came on the drum as Dad bought it. Don't think they're WFL? Gretsch maybe? The spur rods got lost over the years. Dad found this piece of ? the fit the hole. The floor tom muffler was removed so that the 13" tom would fit better inside. Dad still has it.

The rack tom came with upper & lower mufflers! Has anyone ever seen that before? Dad removed the lower when he deleted the bottom head.

Dad made these spacers about 35 years ago from some chrome tubing to support the bottom tom rims with-out the heads.

Thanks, Mikey. These drums aren't mine...yet! (lol). I'm hoping to get the toms & the 24" bass fixed up and back to dad before "wedding season". He plans on beat'n on these dudes as long as he can lift the drum sticks! (he is only 73!). He really loves his GK snare after I fixed it up, so, I want to make the rest of his kit just as nice, if not better. For one, I know he never cared for the consollette style tom mount, yet he put up with it all these years!

A 'working drummer's' kit. After 50 years, that is exactly what it's supposed to look like.

I wouldn't touch them. After you're gone, let the next guy rehab them. Those drums have too much history and mojo and... they are your dad's drums. Keep them safe and sound and just as they are. After the old man is gone, you'll be glad you didn't alter them.

Love the wrench dangling from a shoelace... great stuff.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Dad said "Do it!" So, here we go. I disassembled the toms, removed the old wrap that practically fell-off once the hardware was removed. The shells, including Dad's "new" 24" bass shell have the old glue sanded-off now. I aquired a 5 ply shell that is much better condition than the 3 ply 24. That's what is pictured below. Next I need to fill some extra holes in the bass shell from some aftermarket spurs & Pearl tom mount. Also need to repair the re-rings in the floor tom that are coming apart. The lower bearing edge is hurt'n pretty bad from the rack tom lugs hitting it when it was packed inside between gigs. I also sanded the inside of the floor tom shell to remove most of the dents! The rack tom shell is in pretty good shape. All the hardware is labeled & bagged till I get to 'em.

Here's the date stamp in the floor tom shell. Looks like the guy that stamped it was hurt'n for a cigarette break! You can still tell where I masked-off the ink stamps while I was sanding the dents out. I cut-out small peice of paper the size of the stamp, then applied it the masking tape, then I trimmed the tape down around the paper and coverd the stamp. This way the masking tape would only contact the shell around the stamp and not risk pulling up the ink. I'm gonna sand it inside one more time with some 180 after the repairs. BTW, these toms where "born" one month before me!
