I did this with a Royal Star 1414 tom. It's a 'Martha Stewart-ish' look - the drum sounds great though.
That is pretty darn cool, I love the fact you took a risk and did something way out of the ordinary, good job it looks very professional.
If you're going with reinforcement rings, you might try a vintage bearing edge.
But whatever you desire, really. It's not like they are valuable vintage pieces that would be devalued with the addition of sharper bearing edges.
For my lauan drums with no rings, I went with a simple 45/45.

So, how did the MIJ kit sound with 45's done on it?
Mine was MIT, actually, a later Pearl stencil (CB 700 or Maxwin) than what I believe yours to be.
I haven't played the set since I got the Slingerland kit, and my tuning abilities have increased a lot, but I got compliments on the tone.
Theoretically, something a little sharper than stock rounded edge would brighten up the lauan shells a bit.
Consult with the people who are doing your edges. See what they think.
Lauan is a rather splintery wood, so going super-sharp is probably not in the cards. I left about 1 ply in the center.

I do worry about the splintering...I'm hoping the added plies of the re-rings will help keep that down somewhat...I thought about going with perhaps a 45 and round over on the outer edge...
I'm not against 30's. I just really want a fat sound as opposed to a jazzy one...these have a great low rumble...
I keep doing the John Good shell whack to listen to them...
I need a life. ;)
Well,
Another update...today the UPS truck dropped off a little package from veneersupplies.com.
I ordered AAA grade Red North American Gumwood for the inner ply. This is really going to dress up how these drums look...and maybe sound...(probably not likely! but I'm sure they're gonna look sexy!)
I ordered two 96" lengths of it and it is 17.5" wide...now all I need is that exercise ball...
I'm shocked at how cool it looks in person!
Also thinking about doing the inside of the bass drum hoops in this as well if I have enough left over...thoughts on that?
Well, another update...
I've decided to dip my toes in first with the veneering of the inside of the shells...
I'm starting with the 12" drum. I bought a rubber roller and a huge bottle of Titebond III and I applied a nice heavy coat to the inside of the drum...I then rolled the coat smooth...
Next, I cut my veneer to size. I've decided to overlap about 1/4" of the veneer at the seam...I'll perhaps sand this lightly...but I feel like it looks good and I know it'll be a strong way to seal the edges...I used the brayer to roll the veneer smooth inside the shell.
Next, I placed the large rubber exercise ball (cough...bladder) inside the shell. I purchased a good bicycle pump and I'm using it to slowly inflate the ball to pressure inside the shell to somewhere between 20-30 psi. Not too much...just constant and equal pressure inside the shell...and the shell is holding shape and the pressure VERY well...I gotta say I'm surprised...
...this is gonna sit until tomorrow morning...I'll then trim off the last little 1/4" of extra veneer I left...I then plan to coat the edge with more titebond to ensure the edge is fully bonded...
Wow. That is one creative mind you have there. And I do like the gumewood veneer.
