Slingerland Snare Question - What is it? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

My 12 year old daughter is in the habit of buying snare drums to fix and resell to fund her expensive drum habit. She picked up a snare drum at a yard sale a couple of days ago. It was wrapped in black naugahyde (seriously) but you could see an oval badge underneath. She bought it and brought it home and when we removed the black fake leather, it was a Slingerland 5.5" x 14" wooden snare drum. The finish is an iradescent, black/blue. Almost looks like slabs of mica or mother-of-pearl are in it. Any ideas of what it would be? We were able to clean it up with just some hot water and now, her $5 investment looks pretty darn nice. I guess someone just wanted leather looking drums. I should have bought the rest of the set!

Anyway, so on eBay it will go. What is a good starting price for this drum. The badge is black with gold writing, it says it was produced in Niles, Il and the serial number is 49500. She put new heads on it but everything else is original, even the snare. I can put a photo here, if that would help. Thanks.

Pics always help with assessing...For a $5 investment, your daughter will make profit for sure...You definitely should see if the rest of the set is still available...

Yes please add pictures.

Serial number puts it at early 60's.

1963 catalog puts the color at Sparkling Blue Pearl, or couple years later Blue Agate pearl.

Lemme get this straight - your 12 (as in the number after 11) year old daughter is into buying, rehabbing, and flipping used drums? Not much into Justin Beiber, boys, hanging out with the girlfriends? That's pretty wild. Newsworthy almost. Would make a neat story. Sounds like a cool kid :)

Actually, she's into Justin Bieber because, "He started out as a drummer, too, Dad!" She loves her drums, but they take up a lot of room! Neither her mother nor I are musically inclined, but she's fantastic. I figure there are worse things she could be doing. With this, she's learning about drums, history, music, restoration...plus making a buck or two. I'm proud of her.

I'll post a photo(s) of it when I get home tonight.

Ditto what Larry said! I feel that the badge number may be 1964, which is when blue agate pearl was introduced. "Irradescent, black/blue" sure sounds a lot like blue agate to me. See this link: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_4_finishes9.htm. The serial number on the badge in the picture is 40233, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that this is the color of your daughter's drum.

I guess it's also possible that it could be light blue pearl or a faded black diamond pearl. I'm anxious to see pictures!

Here is a photo of it. Hope it helps.

Hi hrd2kch,

This snare is an artist model, the wrap looks to be black diamond pearl.

Your daughter has got herself a bargain here. Early 60's so it may be a solid

maple shell, if so could be worth $250+.

Pics of the inside would help also.

Yes, that is black diamond pearl. As Stevo said, post pictures of the interior. A straight down shot at the bearing edge (the edge that the drum head sits on) will help us determine the shell construction, which will determine value.

Just a thought: if your daughter is interested in drums, and you can get the whole kit, this could be one of the best drum kits she will ever own. In other words, you may want to encourage her hang on to this one.
