Slingerland Snare or Copy

Loading...

Hello I need help identifying this snare. It has the 3 pt. strainer and butt plate that say Slingerland. The shell looks like mahogany with reinforcement hoops. Did Japanase snares from the sixties use reinforcement hoops? Also the wrap doesn't go to the top of the snare. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First clue is the additional piece of wood added to the shell to put the strainer in...The strainer may be Slingerland, but the rest screams import. Are the bearings edges flat? That's another clue to import. Slingerland would of had some larger washers too, I believe.

Well, the strainer and butt plate say Slingerland, if you're correct then someone would have had to added them to the drum. What about the reinforcement hoops? I've seen other Japanese snares and they had no reinforcement hoops.

Do the lugs look correct? Maybe someone put Slingerland hardware on a Japanese shell? Doesn't make sense to me, unless they were trying to sell it as a Slingerland.

To me the hardware looks right, but the shell definitely is funky.

The grain is obviously vertical on the interior. Lauan mahogany... not a Slingy shell.

I am one of the resident MIJ students. This is a Pearl made shell, I have one just like it, re-rings and all. Even the same wrap. That is definately a MIJ snare. The strainer may be Sling, but rest is not. That may well be a Star strainer, as they made a Rapid Strainer, even called it that, it is from the late 60s. It is a cataloged item. Nice little snare, once you recut the edges, and clean it up. Or, I might be interested in it, if you think you might not want to keep it.

The lugs are correct. Many Slingerland lugs made in Japan, as Bud was too cheap to sue them. three different styles of Sling lugs.

Well, like I said the strainer and butt plate say Slingerland, so at least I know those are authentic.

I tried the snare out, the darn thing sounds sweet, didn't do a thing to the bearing edges.

I'll post a video.
