I am actually getting ready to put together a 1969/1970 ish Black Sparkle Pearl Slingerland Kit. I will post some pics of the shells for comparison in a bit.

Ill be seeing the set on Monday. its 12,14,20!!! not 13,16,20! In the meantime Im having a blast with the super cool set I found last night! Pics and story later....

I'm really intrigued about this "Black Sparkle vs Root Beer Sparkle" controversy! Mikey may very well be correct. Still, I'm hesitant to think it is some rare finish until those lugs are off and we see what's underneath. Keep us informed!

Heres a scanner of Rob Cook's "The Slingerland book" page 137 where theres a Root beer set pictured. Its refered as an "uncataloged finish from the 60's"

Here are some pics of the Black Sparkle Shells I just got off Ebay. Pretty decent pics to help compare and contrast. However these are 1970 shells which used the gold flecks as opposed to the earlier 60's Black Sparkles that used something else like red or purple.
