I picked up a ribbed sling aluminum 5 x 14 snare last year, it was an 8 lug, I liked it so much I bought a 10 lug when I found one. Something about the aluminum that makes the snare project better than many of my cob or cos snares. so I wondered how fantastic a 6.5 aluminum sling snare would sound like, but as far as I can tell they never made one. If someone can shed any light on this for me, much appreciated. G
Sling 6.5 aluminum snares?
70's Pearl Fiberglass Ivory
No such animal. at least not cataloged!! never ever have I seen or heard of one.
They made a 6 lugger as well!
I had a 6 lug version...and it had the orange peel finish with no ribs...guessing it was early 60's. Pretty neat drum...it was all original down the to the wires. Should have kept it...oh, well. Good sounding drums!
does anyone have a pic of what that drum looks like?

Here is a pic of the one that I had. I should have kept it but sold it to raise some funds for my '58 Luddy that I restored.

It did sound killer and it was super clean and all original. Now that I look at the pics again, maybe I should have sold my '63 Acro instead of this one...but my Acrolite actually has factory-crimped snare beds and I think that is also kind of rare. I guess it wasn't meant for me to keep. I can't keep 'em all. It went to a 16-year old girl drummer for her birthday, so I was glad about that.

From what I've read up on the Slingerland snares (I just purchased a 1971 Gene Krupa model today, haha!) that aluminum model was the student version: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1967-68_slingerland_15.jpg
From what I've heard, played, and seen, I'm a huge Slingerland fan. My Gene Krupa is a 14x6.5, but it's COB, not aluminum (not to mention an 8 lug).

Yes...you are correct...from what I read also...the aluminum snares were the student models...but still sounded great! Way better than the MIT crap they sell these days as student snares.
I actually just recently purchased an early 60's Leedy Shelly Manne COB 5x14 snare, which is really just a COB Slingy Radio King with Leedy lugs, strainer and butt plate. It is also my favorite snare now...sounds SO damn good!
I do love a good aluminum snare, though. I also have a '63 Acrolite and a '63 Supraphonic.
