This little guy was rewrapped with a hideous white cortex wrap sometime in the not too distant past as i discovered it while prepping the drum for restoration.. To my pleasant surprise, the original WMP wrap was perfectly preserved underneath, and the only issue was the normal yellowing, which i think looks awesome..

Date stamped is long gone, but according to the serial#,

he's 49 years old.. ('66) Love this snare and will NEVER sell it..It's warm, punchy, sensitive and has a superb woody tone that only classic Ludwig could provide.. Can you dig it Daddy-O's ?

ENJOY ! ;)

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Got a question for the experts: When did Ludwig stop offering the Downbeat snare with the Downbeat drum set? I see in the 64 catalog there is a Downbeat snare pictured with the kit, but in the 67 catalog there is a supraphonic (no catalog available for 65/66). I just acquired a 66 Downbeat kit in WMP and was wondering what snare I would need to get to make this kit *catalog correct*. Not saying I will actually get the snare, but I'm just curious what was offered as standard in 66. And yes I understand the catalogs were just the starting point and the customer could request whatever snare they wanted.

I'll say! Those shells look amazing. Sorry I can't help with which snare would be catalog correct for '66.

I'd guess that by '66 they were putting Supras with everything in order to speed up production. No full line catalogs so it's tough to say for sure when that change might have been instituted. There were probably some promotional materials issued that might tell for certain, or maybe issues of the Ludwig Drummer.

Also note that the 67 catalog is actually copyrighted 1966 (and prices are said to be effective "July 1, 1966"). So by mid 1966 anyway the Supra was the cataloged snare with the "Downbeat" outfit.

Ah, thanks for the info. I was sort of hoping the Supra would complete this kit cause they are cheaper and easier to find!

I'd say a choice of a Supra, Acrolite, Pioneer, or Jazzfest would all work!! ...at least for me.. That is one nice Downbeat kit you have there!
