Should I buy this Ludwig 70's kit? Last viewed: 16 hours ago

Found this kit locally. From the looks of it, its a mid 70's classic kit. However, I have never seen a bronze/copper colored Ludwig finish before. I have asked the guy to send me a better picture of the serial numbers but it looks from the legible numbers to be a 1976 kit.

I cant tell if that snare is a chroma-wood. Can any of you id what kind it is from the picture. Was chroma-wood even around in the mid 70's? The larger floor tom definitely looks like an 18", which is why I want the kit. Asking price is $400 for the kit but I am sure I can get it cheaper with cash and truck in hand when I show up.

I currently have a set of Tama StarClassic Performers but I would love to have a kit like this to play and possible restore with new wraps. It is more of a nostalgic thing for me since I first starting drums in middle school back in the early 80's.

What say you? Good deal or keep shopping?

Chris

Do you have any idea what kind of wrap that is? I didn't see anything bronze/copper on the Ludwig documentation page. Just out of curiosity, why is removing the wraps so troublesome?

Thanks for the feedback

This seems like a good deal. It's a unique look for a Ludwig kit. I can find nothing in the reference material that this was a Ludwig finish, nor can I find any testimonials on the internet. (However, there are some products that do not show up in catalogs). I would play them as they are. (I have a vague, memory of seeing Ludwig Goldtone marching drums, like the finish they put on some metal tamborines. But I could be completely mistaken).

Mid 70s, 6 piece Ludwigs for $400? I'd be all over that myself. You can easily pay that much for a used starter kit around my parts. If wrap is original - LEAVE IT! Original is always best, even if it's not your favorite. If something more to your taste comes up down the line, you'll be in a better trading position, or could at least get back what you paid, and probably more... all this, assuming it is as represented.

Ditto Daddynowhere. I'd be shelling it out. But -- you may well be right about cash in hand with truck.

Metal wrap (assuming that's what it is) is very hard to pull off without damaging the outerply of the shell. Heat and PATIENCE is what it takes (and a LOT of the last -- try to go too fast and... well, let's just say you'll wish you would have had more patience...).

I really like it the way it is, of course we just have pictures to look at. I think 400 is worth it. I guess I would try 300 and settle in the mid at 350 and that to me would be a very good price if they are as good as they look.

I too say leave the wrap alone.

The guy is out of town until Friday evening. I will be going over to look at them hopefuly Saturday. If all works out, I will bring them home. How will I know if the wrap is original? I would assume it is since it has the badges intact unless the badges come off easily during a rewrap. (I have never restored a drum). I dont know why, but I have always wanted a b/o 70's kit so I am pretty stoked on getting these. If the wrap is in good shape, I will keep them. The copper with black heads might look sexy - Excited

Does that look like a Supra snare? Those are about 2 bills alone, right?

Origional wrap or not, I still like it and would keep it. But please get us some good pictures if you bring em home! And you are not alone, I am wanting a 70s kit also. I used to have one in natural maple, sold it because I was " done drumming". Wish I had it back!!!

Man... I like that wrap! And for $400.00, as long as they are in good (or even fair) shape you can't go wrong.
