Roto Tom Q Last viewed: 2 hours ago

The drummer for Tool used a 12 and a 14" on a stand between his two bass drums on one of their tours a few years back as his only rack toms. They looked like the Remo chrome style so he was/is obviously hip to what TroutStudio said about them mic'd up. I remember them being heavy and built like a tank.

That's how mine were. The small ones had the levers. The bigger ones had bolts.

I got the 6,8,10.(no levers) I don`t like the pop of an 8" tom-tom and they`re hard to tune. The 8" roto is great. The 6 is very high, like a rim shot.

I don`t like the larger one`s. Although they are fun for effects.

If I put levers on mine, you couldn't tell them from the later one`s because that`s the only change they made.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I got them for the high, and Moon had them off to the side. I couldn`t find the blue heads though.

Here's what I did with mine. Lots of fun and great practice kit. I have 8 10 12 14 16 and the 6 as well but its not mounted in the pic. Would love to find an 18 to use for the bass instead of the 16 but the 18's are rare and pretty pricey.

That's a great kit. You've got to admit - they are fun to play.

Miked up, they were awesome. I know why. I saw an oscilloscope of a roto-tom and the decay is almost perfectly pure, since there are no overtones from a shell or bottom head. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I have some recordings of mine and they sound killer. Fairly hopeless without drum fill though.

Cool & Interesting Fact....an oscilloscope could be a great tool in order to compare some shell response, etc. Cool1

Thanks, dude! you gave me a lot of ideas, that make me feel like Dr Drumkenstein LoLoLoLo

BTW rototoms at his best, could be heard at "Time" Pink Floyd´s intro !!

Did you make your own mounts or is that an accessory. Post a close up of the clamp please. I like to know how things work.

I have the typical 6 8 10 I bought in the early 80's then picked a 12 & 16 at a garage sale for $20. Thought about doing something similar for practicing.

I remember seeing a 16 and 18 mounted on one stand and they had pedals on a cable that changed the pitch like a tympani. Always wanted that but never saw them again. I saw them at the Ye Old Music Shoppe in Marissa IL. Bob Heil's old shop in mid 70's.

I used threaded rod plastic tubing and Gibraltar rack clamps to mount everything. The tubing isn't working out all that good you can't tighten the clamp enough to allow tuning the roto by turning it. I'm going try something else just haven't decided what yet. Also built a wooden support for the bass to hold the pedal just a short piece of 4x4 and some plywood.
