Removing Speed King bearing caps for cleaning... Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I know we've been down this road many times, but I'm having a bastard of a time trying to remove one of the bearing caps. The other one popped out with minimal coercion, but the other is hanging on for dear life! I've wrapped it in a towel and tapped the tower, I've even tapped the bearing casing and tried gently with a fine screwdriver, but the little swine will not come out. I don't want to scratch it or damage it, so I'm trying to figure out a way to push it out from inside. Possible?

Anyone got a better idea or some advice? I'm struggling here...

When I was working on my Leedy pedal I was having similar issues with nuts not coming undone. So I took my torch out, used a low setting and bam, those suckers moved with ease. I would try heating it up, that should do the trick.

Soak in 99% Isopropyl Alcohol razer blade to clear the gap has worked for me.

I use a heat gun on the tube first, it melts the grease and expands the housing. Wrap in a towel or rag and use a soft (plastic or rubber) hammer and strike the housing. It always comes right off. I have rebuilt at least a half a dozen in the last couple of months.

unscrew adjustment screw on bottom, remove spring and drive rod. use air compressor and shoot air into tube, make sure to wrap cap with a rag to catch cap when it takes off!

There is a sticky on the subject of renovating Speedkings on the forum. The best way that I have used to pop the cap off is in there. It includes hitting the post with a hammer, making the cap pop out.

This method is described in detail in the thread I link to.

Have seen a few temperature based solutions EG.. Heat Gun//Freeze spray.... etc... happy to help out if needed.. Half hour drive away... (have rubber hammer & beer)...

Sounds distinctly plannish, but I don't have an air compressor or access to one, so there's a bit of a damper to that idea. Thanks for that anyway, definitely something to remember, and/or to acquire in the future!

G'day John,

Whereabouts are you again? I'm going to have another go at it tomorrow and see how I go, but I may well take you up on that offer! I have a rubber mallet and a heat gun, but beer is always good!

I'll let you know if I need mallet and hops-based assistance!
