Questions About Recent Purchase..

Hey Guys,

I picked up this beautiful 1967 Ludwig kit this week. It's all original and came with all the hardware, cymbals, and even included the cases. But I have a few questions about it. I purchased it from the original owner. He said he bought it new in 1968 at Mark's Music in Farrell, PA. Marks music is still i business today. I even have the receipt.

The sizes are 9"x13 " tom (serial 549541) white interior w/ date stamp Dec. ? 1967, Round muffler type.

16"x16" floor tom (serial 526929) white interior w/ date stamp Jun ? 1967, baseball bat type muffler.

14"x20" bass drum (serial 525941) white interior w/ date stamp Jun, 30 1967.

and also included Ludwig Supraphonic w/ date stamp Mar, ? 1968

Question #1 - how was this set purchased new when all the dates on the drums are so far apart. Shouldn't they be all within the same month a least?

Question #2 - is this finish Burgundy Sparkle?

Question #3 - How much do you think this kit is worth, with all the hardware snare and cymbals?

Question #4 - Does it hurt the value of the kit, that the dates are far apart and that one tom has a round mufler and the other the baseball type?

Sweet!!!! OMG that is NICE.

Badges were made and dumped in a bin. Different badges came in at different times from the manufacturer and we're added to the bin as necessary, so the badges at the bottom could be there are really long time. Think of boxes sitting in inventory and a worker just goes over and grabs a box and dumps it. They didn't really care which box they grabbed, they just grabbed one.

So drums were kinda done the same way, they made them stamped them and when they got put with a kit they got with a kit regardless of the date.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14

Mighty nice find. The dates being different are simple factory production.. They Rolled X shells in this size on this date and stacked them up in the corner.

they rolled Y shells in this size on this date and put them in the corner. The already made shells get put together when the kit is ordered by a dealer.

It's like my Gibson guitar. The headstock serial indicates Jan 5th 1979... The pickups are date stamped from Dec of 78... they had the pickups in a bin waiting to be put in a guitar.......

A mighty nice set. Take good care of it.

Real sweet!

My understanding was that the serial numbers weren't even used in order, that they were all dumped in a bucket and it was whatever the assembler grabbed. I don't think that there were any records kept at Ludwig about what was what. It was a compliance with the insurance companies that things have serial numbers, nothing more.

That finish isn't too common and looks great on stage.
