Question: try 'em before you buy 'em?

Loading...

Just a question from earlier today in regards to vintage kits:

Do you try 'em before you buy 'em?

The last two kits I bought (blue sparkles & SBPs) I didn't try 'em. (I would have bought them anyway!)

I was checking out two kits at a local shop today and I was wondering what they would say if I asked to set them up to try them.

I haven't tried out a kit since my first one. I've owned 7 since then and didn't try any of them out before I bought them...and have only been dissatisfied with one of them, which was a DW kit, believe it or not.

That said, the store should at least let you set them up and try them out a minute or two. That would also help you identify some issues, if any exist.

I have some nice kits. Three 60s Rogers. An 83 Rogers Jazz Londoner with an 18" BD and 1414 floor... Purchased from pictures only. Would not let any of them go. If you are buying the right stuff, from the right era, with great pictures, certain drums are going to deliver good sound. How do you judge a vintage kit with worn out heads that are forty-five years old ... or older, from a ten minute play time in a drum shop with a bunch of weirdo critics laughing at you trying to tune that mess?

Why not just ask them ?

If they were local or within reasonable driving distance, I would like to see them in person and inspect them. A respectable seller should not have a problem with that. But all seven of my kits and various snare drums were all purchased from a distance using photos only (and an occasional e-mail discussion or phone call). No regrets on any of them.

I will try them if they are local and set up at the seller`s place...Although, I have bought most of my drums online where I can`t test drive them...Normally I ask for lots of pics or even sound bytes...

Great thread!!

Once in a while a bad drum comes in out of round or a bad edge but I judge acdrum on it's color vibrancy , age and matching numbers so I was reasoning this conservators method on out of round drumsvanother theead to be started soon !

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
