What does the narrow badge under the Pearl badge on the bass drum say?

Based upon what I see in the picture, it will say either "WOOD-FIBERGLASS" or "FIBER GLASS SHELL." There should also shell-type badges on the toms as well. The style of the double tom mount indicates this set was made in either 1978 or 79. "MAPLE SHELL" kits weren't available until the 1980s, but the "Pearl" badges that show in your picture on the toms are the 70s badges.

Depending upon condition (which yours does look good), eBay prices would bring you less than $500. I sold two wood-fiberglass sets this past Christmas season. One was original wrap (blue) in good condition. It brought $480. The other was a rewrap, and it brought about $400. Those prices included shipping/handling.

Do you have more pictures?

Dave,

I stand corrected. That is definately late 70s tom arms and "Pearl" badges, and no doubt 80s Maple Shells (there is a subtle difference in the tom arms between the 1978 and 1980 catalogs, and I am personally familiar with the difference). My guess would be the wrap is what is called "Orange Flash" from the 1980 catalog (US Market). So what you probably have is a set that was produced in very late 1979 or early 1980 and actually had parts of both series, sort of a "transitional" set like we see in Ludwig and other brands at times.

It's also possible this was a set not produced for the US Market, which is what I'm always assuming and basing my opinions on unless I know otherwise.

Are you in the US? I don't have much expertise on Pearl drums produced for other markets...

The FG, W-FG, and later Maple shells were marketed as "Pro" drumsets. They are of very good quaility. I've owned a set of Pearl's W-FG line since bought new in 1978. I took good care of them -- but they are still in just about as close to new condition as possible.

My only "gripe" with mine is that they are HEAVY to haul around. The FG shells were lighter, but I have very little experience with the maple shells. I do have a couple of 16x24 Pearl maple shell bass drums and they are NOT as heavy as my 14x22 W-FG BD (mine maples are out of the mid-80s).

I don't know what your market is like over there, but if these were in my "stock," I'd be asking around $600 + shipping. Probably eventually take less, but I'd wouldn't be in a rush, either.

Just my 2 cents. Hope somebody else jumps in here, too...
