Ludwig Find

I found these Ludwig's on CL and bought them. 16"x24" Bass drum drilled for double Spurs. Only has the front Spurs and spur mounts. The 10"x12" tom is a 8 lug tom with the large lugs. The 14"x14" is a ten lugger. I have never seen this before. There are no extra holes in the drums. No Tom mount on the 10"x12" and a virgin bass drum. Which I like actually. The bass and tom have the large keystone badges. No badge on the floor tom. Also I think it is odd the vent hole is on the bottom between the lugs. Someone painted them black. I don't know if they were wrapped before ?

They are the 6 ply Maple. I presume Monroe. The shells are in great condition. I bought them for the 14"x14" floor tom. Anyone ever seen or have a 10 lug 14"x14" ? Definitely factory from what I can tell. Bass drum hoops have no inlay groove. Missing one Lug. Lugs and rims will clean up nicely. I want to strip that black paint off. I was reading a thread here recently about that. If someone could tell me the easiest paint stripper to use. Never done that before. This must be pieces from a larger set. Odd sizes for a set, but will sound just fine. I may rewrap the 14"x14" to match my Silver Sparkle Ludwig's. Anyone know anything about these ? I am pretty good on the Ludwig stuff but have never seen this many lugs on these size toms. Bass serial #3095867. 12" tom #3118664. Floor ? Would make a cool little set. They sound great.

Nice find..

The only idea I can come up with regarding the 10lugger 14x14...

Would be if it might have started off as a Marching Tom..or snare even,?

Take a good look inside to see plugs or something out of place.?

No, absolutely nothing. No extra holes. Only drilled for the lugs and leg mounts. Really nice 6 ply Maple. Heavy little drum with that thick wood and all that hardware. What gets me is the vent placement. Don't know if you can see it good in the pic because they painted over the eyelet. It's between the middle lugs in the pic on the bottom. The eyelet has been removed and replaced. Not sure about the other two.

I've seen 10 lug 14" drums though not often . I actually have a pair of Mapex die cast hoops, 10 lug that were from a tom. Far as the vent hole, perhaps that tom didn't come with floor tom legs. The 12" has the vent hole in the same place, only at the top. Maybe the 14" was a hanging and someone added the other two brackets for legs and removed the badge as it would have been on the bottom.

I have never had a 12" 8 lug tom either. Must have been a special order.

Eric Carr's kit had the same amount of lugs. Think it was the norm for the line of drums.

Yep! Those are 80's Monroe drums, Maple Classics I believe. Heavy drums, had a set back in the early 90's.

There was a period in the late 80s and early 90s when Ludwig "power" toms had more lugs than was typical before or since. I'd guess a ten lug 14 would be from that period.

Very well could have been standard for that set. But the 12" has no tom mount at all. Virgin tom and bass. I'm still not sure of the year these were made. 6 ply so had to be late 70's early 80's. I may keep the toms and sell the Bass drum if anyone is interested.

They are from the 1980's, mid to late. The 12" could have been special ordered with no mount, but aside that it's standard for the time. A lot of guys were not big fans of those modular mounts ( they are a tad gaudy ) The virgin bass drum I believe was standard issue. The catalog photo I posted, the bottom kit has a virgin bass.
