Ludwig BR Late 70s snare vs Rock/Concert

What is the difference between a late 70´s Ludwig Buddy Rich snare 14"x5" and a Rock/Concert 14"x5"?

Maybe the Rock/Concert only was the new name that "took over" after Buddy left Ludwig?

Anyone?

The Buddy Rich Super Classic was 5.5X14 from 1947-56. It was renamed in 1960 & became the Super Classic until 1970, at 5.5X14. The Rock/Concert c.1978 came in 5 & 6.5 X14. (The Ludwig Book)

Good question actually... and there's an interesting answer too! You are quite correct in your assumption... there is NO DIFFERENCE between the two snare drums as they are identical! Buddy was still with Ludwig during this time/era, and the cataloged snare drum with his personal set was the #482 Buddy Rich... and that was the WOOD model. As an aside, Buddy RARELY if EVER played a wood model snare during this Ludwig endorsement as he favored the metal models, but Ludwig chose to catalog the wood #482 Buddy Rich with his signature set in the catalog. That said...

The Rock/Concert snare drum.. same size/specs .. is also #482! It is indeed... the exact same drum!

Ok, thanks for clearing it out for me.

So, if you have a 14"x5" in WMP, it´s a BR snare. And if you have it in 14"x6.5" or a 14"x5" in any other finish than WMP, it´s a Rock/Concert snare :D:D:D

It´s that the right conclusion?

The #482 Buddy Rich or Rock/Concert snare drum was available in one's CHOICE of finish/wrap.. but .. yeah, one would naturally think that if the drum were in WMP, it would be the Buddy Rich as that was HIS color! But that isn't an absolute as this particular model snare drum regardless of moniker, was available in ANY pearl wrap Ludwig had available. It "appears" that the Rock/Concert was for the most part, available in NATURAL wood finish... well, at least as shown in the catalog anyway. Bottom line comment...

You are correct! It's all in the "name"... everything else being completely equal!

As far as i know and have been looking up in the Ludwig book, there is no official Buddy Rich Model after 1960 and no SuperSlassic after 1970.

I do own a 1966 Super Classic (if that's the drum you are referring to as BR Snare) and a 1978 Rock Concert...

There are some differences in the drums at least.

1. the SuperClassic is an 8-Lug Snare, The RockConcert is a 10 Lug Snare.

2. The Strainers are the same, but the butt ends are different, as are the Snare Wires ("normal" in the SC, adjustable on the RC)

3. Shells (of course) are different 3-ply + re-rings on the SC, 6-ply on the RC.

Voilà....

... except... BOTH snare drums in question are in fact the #482, and that was THE snare as cataloged with the Buddy Rich Outfit in the Ludwig catalog. This is a case of semantics.. language, if you will. The late 70's through 1980 BR snare as cataloged, is the #428... EXACT same drum as the #428 Rock/Concert. In this case, the catalog trumps the Ludwig Book... no disrespect meant/implied to Rob Cook either! Also...

In truth, Ludwig STOPPED calling their wood snare the "Buddy Rich", however... as the snare listed/included with his signature outfit, it is in fact the #428, exact same as the Rock/Concert... no difference! BTW: The #482 model snare in the 1980 SNARE DRUM line-up catalog.. ( addendum to the main catalog ) .. shows the #482 Rock/Concert with a picture of Buddy Rich right by it... because... it's also the Buddy Rich model, although Ludwig stayed away from actually calling it that... and there is a reason/story behind that too. But for another time...

I´m reffering to the 14"x5" snare that came with the Buddy Rich outfit kit that Ludwig were offering 1978-80. Can be seen in the 1980 catalog.

But i think we have the answer in the amount of lugs.

Rock/Concert have 10 lugs.

14"x5" Buddy Rich late 70´s snare have 8 lugs.

But it is strange that they have the same product number #482

Thanks guys for your input!

My mistake.

My newly aquired late 70´s BR has 10 lugs.

Just like the Rock/Concert.
