Ludwig Blue Oyster Pearl set-1960s

Loading...

Question;

Did I ruin the collector value of this set by a silly exercise done back in the

80s?

My Ludwigs were purchased new from Peates Music in Montreal. 1963-64 vintage

They are blue oyster pearl…a fairly classic colour.

I made the mistake years ago of having Steves Music (Montreal) install a Ludwig dual tom tom mounting bracket on the bass drum to accommodate a second 9x13 tom that I found quite by accident…same original blue oyster pearl finish.

The set was originally supposed to come with one tom on the bass drum.

The original single tom tom mounting bracket remains on the bass drum …it is just folded down out of the way.

That silly exercise probably materially affected the value of this set in the eyes of a collector of classic original Ludwigs from that 1963-64 period.

I should have known better.

This all started when I ordered a 8x12 tom tom from Ludwig in Chicago out of the last remaining blue oyster pearl material they had in stock.

When it arrived….it was the wrong colour….the original blue oyster pearl had changed over the years…not even close.

I can’t remember how it all happened but I found a guy that could use my new tom tom (wrong colour) and he had an original (colour) 9x13 that I traded him.

Not ideal as tuning two same size drums (9x13) for different pitches is less than perfect.

Any thoughts on this subject?

Thanks,

David

Welcome, David to the VDF, man this is a good looking kit, the (2) -9x13" toms was a very common thing the drum companies did back then, I have a wfl kit that came stock with(2)- 9x13" tom also! But yes it did affect the re sale value of your kit by Installing the center post mount, this kit would of come with a rail mount as stock equipment. oh also

Thanks for your response.

I was not aware that the double 9x13 tom tom set up was a common factory option available at that time.

The original tom rail mount is still on the bass drum.

I never thought it was a solid piece of equipment.

I still have the original Ludwig Speedking bass drum peddle but I replaced it with a Rogers Swivomatic (sp?) many years ago.

All the cymbal stands were replaced with Pearl...much better in my opinion.

The high hat stand went from Premier (early 60s) to Rogers to Pearl (1980s) which was a much more solid piece of equipment at that time in my opinion. (I still have all the old stuff)

David sure I hope it helps, the rail mount is actually my favorite tom mounting system, actually it's very sturdy! other wise I use a snare drum stand to mount my toms! your stands depending on which ones they are, are fairly valuable! here's a pic of one of my kits with one on it!

Nice looking kit....my those heads look clean!

I understand your comment about the model of rail mount shown on your drum.

The original mount on my drum is the predecessor (I think) to that model.

The fitting on the tom tends to weaken somewhat... the rod connection is much stronger I suspect. (1st photo)

The second mount seen on the tom (like yours) was added to accommodate the double tom tom post that was added on the bass drum back in the 80s.

I am not a vintage drum collector;....I just started thinking about this stuff.

I bought a second set for rehearsals back in the 80s....Pearl Fibreglass and wood. (I don't know if this is considered a vintage drum set?)

Perhaps that should be addressed in a separate thread.

That is when I started to appreciate Pearl cymbal stands.

The Pearl chrome snare drum strikes me as being more substantial than the WFL chrome snare drum. (I have both....maybe I am dreaming?)

The Rogers pedal was added much later;….the Speed King is still being used.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Did you ruin the collectible value by altering the kit? Yes.

Is the floor tom messed with at all?

No....the addition of the cow bell has not altered the drum at all.

In that case, the floor tom has some collectible value. But, the "value" now is as a player's kit. The collectible market is what it is. Value, there, is dependent upon originality of the condition and its completeness. If you use the kit and you love the sound, then that's where the value is, now.

I would look to see if you could trade one of the 13"s or play around with different head combinations to get some tonal difference out of those toms...

Thinner heads with a higher tuned pitch and thicker heads with a lower tuned pitch (or try thin/low thick/high if you haven't already); there's so many different head choices available today to experiment with. Also you could re-work/alter the bearing edges for a different sound.

I wouldn't worry about the collector value so much unless you plan on selling some time soon to pay the rent. The truth is you increased the intrinsic value of the drums for yourself by making them more "playable" with your "custom" modification.
