Ludwig 20" Rocker?

Loading...

Hello all I am buying this orphaned Ludwig bass drum

20" eight lugs per side looks like a six ply no rings clear interior

and with the lighter duty long spur rods

I am pretty sure its a Rocker drum, and I know also, that many rockers came through with Classic lugs.

but the badge being blue /olive made me curious

did they make any Rockers with a blue olive badge?

It even has a Rocker head on it

The badge as can bee seen, looks pretty well tampered with

so I know the chances are best that someone just put a used blue/olive badge

on this Rocker drum

But on the other hand, both wooden hoops are recessed in the center for inlays

I thought the rockers had either solid no inlay wood hoops or chrome plated steel with inlays

and while I have seen the classic lugs on Rockers before

I have not seen them with classic t-rods and claws ???

disregarding of course the odd-ball few Slingerland pieces

Help this MIJ collector out

Most likely a early 80's drum

6 ply and before move to MONROE

Heads were put on all drums from that era and does not have anything to do with the drum being rocker or not.

Just adds to the confusion.

Hi Wayne

aside from the rocker drum head there are those basic long spurs and brackets

I have not seen those on any blue olive stuff before

I started thinking as I look at the silver sparkle inlayed hoop

(at least I think it is silver sparkle?)

Maybe someone dolled up a black wrapped rocker bass to match some blue/olive

black cortex toms

To me that looks like a regular Ludwig 6 ply bass drum that someone ordered the disappearing spurs instead of the curved ones. Except those appear to be Gretsch spur brackets...so all bets are off as far as originality.

Actually the curved spurs don't work that well on a 20" drum so that could be the reason. I have a 20" with the curved spurs and they are (factory) mounted asymmetrically so they don't hit each other inside the drum when retracted. Looks kind of crappy and doesn't let them work too well.

If they are 6 ply then they almost have to be regular Ludwigs...so the badge is probably original but the rest is in the air. As mentioned above the head means nothing. Ludwig split their head line up into three branches Striders (marching), ensemble (concert), and Rockers (drum sets), which were used throughout the various lines.

KO thanks for the reply

In my opening comments

I mentioned the drum had a clear interior and with no rings

I just assumed that meant 6 ply? rather 3

Is there any other number of plys used by Ludwig around this time frame?

I do have a beat up B/W badge granitone 22" Rocker bass

and the spur brackets and spurs do look pretty much the same as these here

Lower lines from that era usually used a four ply shell.

Looks 6 ply maple to me. If it has a little weight to it, it is more than likely six play maple. Some of those claws are not Ludwig though. One even looks like a Premier claw, or generic.

Actually cleaned up and matching claws will be a nice solid bass drum.
