Leedy / Slingeland snare i.d. help? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Ummm. Well, that was me. Seems like a great deal to me!

Here's a question though -- once it arrives, I plan to clean, polish, and detail.

But what would you do about heads, snares, etc?

I DO like to use vintage gear, but I'd like to keep it "original"

This is really the first snare for me like this. Yes, I have an Acro (who doesn't?!), a Rogers Luxor, and a Gretsch RB awaiting a re-wrap.

But this one to me has more of a collector's type vibe. It was produced for such a short period of time - and it surely looks to be in great condition.

Whatcha' y'all think? I could use recommendations from the collective guru-wisdom bank. Or something like that!

Congrats on the auction score!

I think this drum just screams out the want for calfskin heads. I think it would sound best with those, give you a real Leedy Broadway/Slingerland Radio King fatback vibe. I think original snare wires would be best for it as well, but may be rather hard to locate. In which case, Puresound vintage wires should be acceptable replacements.

I am the seller, and BFulton just scored a great deal on a great drum. I was hoping for closer to $250, but I'm happy it's going to a good home. I'm not in the business of messing around with questionable drums. I acquired this beauty back in 2004, and know it to be 100% legit.

I'll be listing a similar 6.5x14, as well as another 5.5x14 Reliance Model after labor day. Pics below.

When I started collecting these brass oval badge drums, I was seeking-out the Shelly Manne model. I had collected a few of these drums, then one day the Shelly Manne drum became available. I've been purchasing other drums as of late, so I have decided to sell off a few of my brass oval SlingerLeedy's.

BFulton's new beauty:

6.5x14 Model:

Thanks, Joe -- I'm looking forward to it - and yes, it's a good home. I have a real thing for vintage gear.... which explains why my favorite sound system is the table top Blaupunkt Riviera radio. Strangely, I can run my iPod through it!

I don't know how to go about finding calf skin heads. So I'm glad I asked. My guess is that this would be an ultra-classy sound!

I might be interested in the 6.5. Is that considered a Broadway model? I have a '30s Leedy Reliance that's one of my favorite drums. Don't have a Leedy/Slingerland in my collection though.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Joe.

I have used Earth Tone heads on a couple of different snare and like them pretty well. But I seem to recall that opinions varied on those.

I've liked them, and they are less $$ ...

but, asking for opinions.........

Thanks!

Well, just searched the site for more info on goat v calf v synthetic. This is WAY complicated.

It looks like there is a preference for calf, but given that I'm a hobby player who doesn't record, goat is a viable $ option. And I DO like the way the earth tone heads feel.

It's also not clear what to use for a reso if I end up with goat/calf. Varying opinions.

Hard to figure out. I also have to factor in that there are a couple of different snare on hand, is it worth it for one.

BUT: I also really appreciate the collector vibe of this snare, and that's really strong. So, given all the choices, my first choice would be calf but I'd have to use a synthetic reso.

Whattya' think??

I've had a good inexpensive experience with Aquarian Modern Vintage. I find them to be very close to skin heads in looks, feel and sound.

But wouldn't your drum be from an era when mostly synthetics were used?

Good question. It's right in the 55 - 57 range.

re: Aquarians. Ditto. I have them on a couple and they're warm and musical.
