From Brewkowski

Their website says it is recorded analog to 1/4" tape. Another video of the bass player, jimmy Sutton, has him talking briefly about his studio. All in all, great band, great recording, imo

Recording to tape is still common. That doesn't mean they didn't use any digital gear to achieve the end result. If you're listening to it on a computer, you're hearing it digitally.

Well, they're a very good band whatever methods they use. I saw a band very similar to them open up for Jack White and enjoyed it quite a bit. There's just something about the thumping bass that really gets inside of you. The drumming is outstanding; occasional busy fills that never get in the way.

Great stuff. I had to watch it several times to soak up all that gorgeous vintage gear. Thanks again for posting it.

In case this has not made the thread. The drummer in the video I believe is Alex Hall. The drummer touring and appearing on Late Night and The Tonight Show with J.D.Mcpherson is Jason Smay (recently/formerly of Los Straitjackets, where he wore a mask). J.D also plays drums on recordings. Don't necessarily believe the video is "the session"--unlikey. Jason S. is now J.D. McPhersons drummer and the band is on tour everywhere. Jason is a vintage guy (drums, cars, motorcycles, etc,.) and a pro drummer. He joined JD mid-2011, leaving the Straitjackets. You can see Jason around Rochester NY with other bands when he is home.

Bought my 69 Luddy's from Jason. SWEEEEET!

Love that first video. The sound is great and those bass strings look crazy.

Great story! I was wondering who the touring drummer was. I'll check Jason out on YouTube soon. Thanks! Any pics of your kit???

Apologies for any offense taken at my 'yelling' - It was meant to be a semi- comical 'tongue-in-cheek' rant. I realize fully that our world is not going to go back to those simpler days. Have to admit though that a modern kit with plastic heads seems almost like an entirely different instrument when compared to a kit with skin heads. DOH

Jeff - Welcome to the wonderful world of vinyl! Whip out all your old albums and have at them.In the late-nineties I recorded some stuff for a local New York cable program. When I listened to the playback, it didn't sound like me at all. The engineer had 'digitized' my takes and linked them to some kind of synch/click track that evens out your playing to the computer generated tempo. It made me sound like a damn electronic drum machine. He took all the overtones and sounds that I work hard to get and he literally sterilized my sound and my playing. I got into a huge argument with the guy who was producing the sessions (who was all of 22 years-old) and I tried to explain to him that he was taking the life (live-feel/real drummer) out of the music. Why the hell hire a real drummer and then make him sound like a computerized drum machine? I lost the argument of course and the music went out sounding like there were no live musicians playing on any of the recordings. It sounded sterile, mechanical and had no 'soul.' Like it was all created on a midi. There is nothing like analog (tape) for recreating a 'live band sound' on a recording. The 'warts,' the little inconsistencies, that the electronic whiz-kids were so diligently scrubbing out of the music is precisely the stuff that makes it sound good... like you're listening to a live band. I have a huge beef with all the reliance on digital this and digital that. It did not make the music better. The life has been taken out of everything. As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to digitize everything anyway, why bother hiring real musicians. Now that's one of my peeves. Mind Blowi I hope vinyl makes a come-back. I miss hearing the sound of a real band making real music.Rant over...John

No doubt, great pet peeve!

Just heard of them yesterday! Real rock and roll, recorded how real rock and roll was put on tape in the 50s. Drummer looks to be using a Leedy in WMP... but someone could probably correct me if I'm wrong. And, there is a quick shot of him using a Speed King!! These guys rock!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZGn4LncY0g

Oh Man! These guys are great! I've never heard of them, Thanks for posting! It sounds like Rocka-Billy to me from the 50s or early 60s. Whatever, it's way cool!
