JD McPherson - check out his drummer Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Mike,

No need for another thread. No animosity meant. I studied music from grade school through university. I was taught to practice with a metronome. I never saw it as a crutch, just a tool to help develop good timekeeping. I record digitally, because it's all I can afford. JD and his band have thousands of dollars in vintage gear. I would use that stuff if I had the choice, but I don't. The relevance to the thread is that the computer screen in the video proves that some digital was used by JD & company. I don't see how it ruined a good song. And you're right; Made in Japan is one of the best live albums of all time.

Best,

From what I have read, these guys recorded 100% analog.... Now, what they did afterwards, i dont know. I'll watch the video again to see if i catch the computer.

It's at 2:36. Pause the video and you'll see it in the back. It looks like it has a Pro Tools screen pulled up.

I like the song too. But somehow this thread turned into a "I hate all things digital". Silly really, as the music has to be digitized to be up on YouTube. The video is digital, and so is the accompanying music. So all this ballyhoo about how you can tell it's analog is nonsense. As I said before, I prefer analog myself, but that gear is rare and VERY expensive. JD & company are filthy rich if they record all their music in analog.

Let's get back to the song, the kit and the pedal the drummer's using. That's how it started out.

My hearing is too shot to tell if it's digital or analog! But as long as it's got a hook and grooves, I'm good!

Their website says it is recorded analog to 1/4" tape. Another video of the bass player, jimmy Sutton, has him talking briefly about his studio.

All in all, great band, great recording, imo
