it looks quite glossy which tells me it could be chrome.
yet, it says in the ad that it's nickel.
...weird....

Without having the hoop in your hands it's hard to tell if its nickel or chrome. If you can trust the seller, have him rub it with a little metal polish (not chrome polish). If black residue comes off on the rag, it's probably nickel, if not, it's probably chrome. As I understand it, it's nickel that gives metal the "chrome" color finish, it's the chromium plate that provides the hard, durable surface to the nickel. Is that right guys?
the nickel plating process involves TWO steps:
copper layer is electrically applied to the base metal
nickel is applied over the copper
Chroming process is the THIRD step going over the nickel
Chromium is very hard and has a more "blue-ish" tint to it
The nickel has a warmer, more orange-yellow tinge.
It's hard to tell from that photo, because they photographed it against a blue cloth! DOH!
Ask the seller....ask for more photos.
Nickel will have more of a "golden" hue whereas chrome will have more of a "bluish" hue...

Did Ludwig ue nickel over steel? I thought the nick hoops were all brass?
ludwig did indeed use nickel over steel hoops in the mid 60's. i had always thought it happened around 65 but have recently found two original 64 pioneers with nickel over steel hoops.
