I never realised in all these years that roger Taylor is a total beast of a player!!

Sorry guys, in my own way I love Queen. I've been to Zanzibar and visited Mercury House. I have played Queen tunes in covers and wedding bands for decades. I have listened to their records for years. But Last night in my hotel room I was watching Max TV. An Australian channel because I'm here for a while, and they were showing a live queen show from somewhere in the late 70's early 80's. A massive stadium type gig. I suddenly realised how much of a beast Roger Taylor really was, or is.

I suddenly realised that my style when it comes to this sort of thing might be more him than Bonzo.

All this talk of Ringo v. Wilson or Hal or versus the world is one thing, but am I the only one to realise after the fact that this guy Taylor might of come in through the side entrance and totally influenced me more than I ever imagined. Weird.

I hope what I am about to say doesn't make me sound like a jerk...

I don't know if "Beast of a player" means he's good or not.

Awesome drummer, vocalist songwriter, Queen wouldn't have been the super group that they were without him.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Freddie and Bryan get most of the Queen ink (and they're certainly deserving), but Roger made major contributions. I'm a fan.

Sometimes we don't notice how good the really good drummers are because they play for the songs, yet we notice how good the songs are. I think this is Taylor's case. I'm not necessarily referring to the Flash Gordon soundtrack :D

Agreed and well said. I always really liked his playing. It always sounded very "English"; wide open and powerful when all of us Yanks were muffling the life out of our toms. I liked the way he often opened his hat just a little on 2 and 4 to add some sizzle to the snare sound. I loved his huge tom fills that were often simple and powerful, but then there was that fill leading into the last chorus of Fat Bottom Girls. I always assumed that was double tracked.

And for those that did not know, it was his voice that added the soprano to their choir overdubs but he could also belt out a rock song like I'm In Love With My Car.

Queen was a group of very talented and smart individuals with a great deal of vision. I liked them a lot. I had a chance to hear the master tracks of Bohemian Rhapsody once and besides the fact that it truly was a masterpiece, the mix down alone would have been a major work of art. I have no idea how many people had their hands on the console to accomplish that in the pre-automation days but it would have been a Herculean task.
