I Did the Unthinkable

I didn't put the center mount on, that's original to the drum. I put the mount to hold the L-arm, I only had to drill two small holes for the screws.

It's your drum, you're playing it, so done. It's not like you're piercing the Mona Lisa's septum.

What size is your bass drum?

It's a 14x22 kick.

It's not a virgin kick to begin with, there's a cymbal mount directly on top of the drum with a good half inch hole.

I still think it's a great kit and I would probably put a rail on it. I don't mind a cymbal stand at the side instead of a mounted cymbal arm, but an extra snare stand is a load I don't want to shoulder.

The center mount for the cymbal rod can be put to good use. Insert a short 3/8" rod for a cow bell mount or a stick tray.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I have a '61 Galaxy 22" Club Date bass drum that is setup like your bass drum with the center cymbal mount only. You can use an old Z bar that fits in that mount and moves the ride cymbal over to the "usual" position. Mine also uses the hoop mounted clipper for the mounted tom. Here is a pic showing the tom setup. I don't have a pic of the Z bar. Gibraltar makes a modern version.

Oh,you didn`t sin though. Sorry.

So why put a cymbal mount on a drum with a cymbal mount original ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I added a cymbal mount to the kick. I had to drill a couple holes, but I had this L-arm sitting around and I wanted to put it to use. I really like having my ride on the kick and it saves me from having to lug around another cymbal stand to gigs. I used a vintage Ludwig mount, so at least it looks like it's original to the kit.

While I would not have done it, in the end they are your drums to do with what you what you wish. At least your modification emulates practice from the period.

I'm using a 22" ride, the cymbal would be too close and probably too heavy for that cymbal mount. I believe it's meant for a splash or cowbell.
