Help w/ 1964 Slingerland Value Last viewed: 1 second ago

Hello I have been trying to restore two kits at once! This one was the most complete so I decided to get this done and sold to get money to help with the other late 50's Ive been posting about. This was saved from a garage almost 3 hrs away from where I live. I have these all cleaned up and they are sounding phenomenal!!! The wrap on this is not that great when you start looking close. Its tight still but the bass drum has spots where it looks like it was hit by some chemicals that started burning the wrap. Those were white and I colored them black to make it blend better. Other than that there are scratches here and there on the toms. The lugs look really good. I redid the hoops. The cymbal mount is flaking. There are only 2 straight legs for the FT so I am using some old Ludwigs right now. The worst part of this kit is there was some slight water damage in the bass drum. It isn't terrible but obviously I want whoever to buy this to know. It also looks like the badges were tampered with but I am not seeing signs of a rewrap. The two toms have ludwig rims on the bottoms. I also had to put 4 ludwig claws on here for now until I can get back to Blairs. I put gently used emperors on top and ambassadors on the bottoms. Front of bass drum has a Remo Powerstroke 3 coated and a

evans emad on the beater. The snare has a different strainer on it than it should. Other than that the snare sounds really good also. I didn't do anything to the snare yet. I think I have covered it all. Please let me know your honest thoughts and opinions. I am continuing to learn and by far am no expert!

Thanks - More pics below.

The bad!

Also I did clean the shells with Novus 2!

The bass and tom are dated/stamped 64. The FT is stamped 66. No stamp in the snare.

Curtis those look great~! Red sparkle is very sharp looking. You did a real nice job on them. These old Slingerlands do sound great too. The floor tom on my 60's kit had a chemical spill etched into the surface wrap. Lucky it did not eat away at it. And some weird brown goo like a wood filler of some kind hard as a rock stuck in one area too. The restoration polish I use (much like novus 1) worked nicely on the etched wrap drips. Pretty much gone. The brown goo I carefully chipped away with a plastic putty knife. Wrap was not affected by that either thankfully. Anyway I think it's cool you kept the original wrap on them. No idea on value sorry. But maybe a ad here with a price you have in mind will net some hits and help settle on a price. Good luck with the sale.

Glenn.

Thanks a lot. This kit sounds soo good. I can only imagine how they would sound if a real drummer tuned them.

If I could just get some Slingerland experts to chime in here it would be very much appreciated.

curtis, the water damage is kind of that!! it is moisture ply separation, very common and an easy fix. but if it's not effecting the shell sound wise it's no problem really! Hey did you post a pic of the snare drum inside the shell? value wise maybe $350.00 or so with all the incorrect parts etc.

To fix that bass drum would I just need to glue inside the cracks with a syringe and get a flexible piece of wood and press it for 24 hrs? Would that take care of the problem?

I can post a pic inside the snare tonight.

I got the right claws today from Blair. If I can get ahold of the 13" and 16" sticksaver rims would that do much for the value? I believe I would have all the correct parts then although not original.

Is there any other stuff not right?

Thanks a lot V2K!!!

Cheers!

curtis for this type repair I use an exact o knife to cut enough into the lifted plies to get the glue into those spots that need the glue work it around with your fingers to get good coverage, if a syringe works for you? and yes wood or plastic form's and clamps to re mold the inner ply, if you follow me here? the original parts will help of course, but the wrap issue and and the snare drum doesn't it have extra holes in it? that is the detractor + slingerland drums sale Way to cheap to start with!! I'm a Ludwig guy through and through, but I have a huge Love for Slingerland drums!! some of the finest drums ever built!!

I completely respect every word you say to me V2K. I do appreciate it! I will update the bass repair and put pics of the snare inside (which does have extra holes) tomorrow.

Let me ask the forum this.

Is it wrong for me to ask for more for this set? I have put a lot of hours into restoring it and making it, what I feel is a quality vintage drum set, albeit a "players set."

So would it be wrong for me to ask and possibly sell for more than $350?

I also wanted to note I am including the snare stand and hi hat stand with it.

I certainly hope so!! The price I gave isn't set in stone just a starting point!!

Here are some pics of the inside of the snare. What strainer would be the right one?

Going to start the bass drum repair. Got all the lugs off and put felts in them to avoid any future rattling!

What is ideal to clamp against the shell to flatten the surface?
