Help, need some input on vintage Gretsch Last viewed: 10 seconds ago

Hi Everyone, I just signed up with this forum.

I need some help and advise..

I have a 1960's Gretsch Aqua Satin Flame wrap. I believe it is "the one nighter" It is a 3 pc set. 14x20 bass, 8x12 tom and the snare is actually a Rodgers Dynasonic... This was my 1st kit I got back in the early 70's (brand new) but the label indicates made in the 60's..

When I was a kid, Of course I wanted more drums... So I did something really stupid.. I had a whole drilled into the bass and added a Ludwig Hercules Dble tom mount. Today I can kick myself for doing that..

Here's the thing... I want to refurbish the kit..

1st thing: Is there anyone that still sells the original aqua satin wrap? I would need to re wrap due to the bass drum situation.. So I wold wrap the whole set.

2nd: I want to fix the whole in the bass drum. Is there a way to patch up the wholes once I remove the old wrap? What can use to fill the whole up?

3rd. The round Badge... It was lost when the ludwig mount was installed. I found one that is available.. They said it will fit any drum..

This one has the whole in the center so it has to be either for the bass or the snare... The tom is a solid round badge.. What size whole would be needed to be drilled (into the Patched bass drum) and where exactly would it be. (Aprox how far in the center? Is it closer to the back of the bass or closer to the front?

and the 4th thing.. The single rail tom mount and the diamond tom mount. I found one on line..I didn't buy it yet. It's a little rusted. Do you know what kind of metal it is? I was thinking of maybe having it re chromed along with my lug mounts and lug tops( where you but the drum key to tune)..

Does this sound right?

Thanks everyone in advanced.

There are Aqua Satin wraps sold but I seriously doubt you will get a match. All you need is a piece anyway. With a kit like that, I'd send it to a restorer unless you really know what you're doing. A good restorer can hide a hole (this needs to be patched with either a donor shell or a carefully made wooden plug) because they do it so much. I've patched and wrapped many a kit but even I would seriously consider paying the money to get it done properly or sell it as is. Without a floor tom though, a bit tough to say what it would bring. I'm sure the Gretsch experts will chime in. Welcome and good luck.

It would probably be cheaper to buy a new Maxwell rail mount than to have an original one re-chromed and the new one would work better besides. It fits the original holes that should be in the drum.

Chrome plating is pretty expensive to have done.

A Hercules mount? Ouch!

Precision carries satin Flames but getting an exact match could be a problem.

Maybe just leave the center mount in place - if you have the arm you could mount a cowbell or splash or even a little timbale hanging to the right, to make an "interesting" 5-piece. At least it is Ludwig not Pearl or something. Mine's a Tama :( [pic]

If the wrap is good elsewhere on the kit it would be a shame to pull it off just for the hole in the bass drum I think. The new wrap isn't as cool and yours is original.

Also, maybe just wait until you can source an original rail mount that doesn't need re-chroming. I'm assuming you want to keep and play these - if you're selling I wouldn't touch anything.

Cool drums!

Thanks Downtown farmer.

I don't think I'm going to sell it. But I can really kick myself for doing that. At least I see I'm not the only one who did that! LOL I really wanted to restore it as best as I can back to original, But I just don't if it worth it or not. Would it be worth anything If I restore it, i don't know.. I've seen them going for 1800 or so, But with the whole in my bass drum, I really don't think it would be worth much, even if I patch it.. It's like restoring an old muscle car, But those are usually worth more after you restore them. I wish I can find original wrap.. Thanks for the input!! Was that picture a gretsch kit too with the tama mount? Is that rail bracket original? It looks so clean!

That is the Ludwig bass drum of the Ludwig/Gretsch kit which I sold 20 years ago and just recently bought back. The Tama mount was there when I first got the kit. 20 years ago I installed a rail mount, but that one is long gone, can't remember where it went. Anyway the holes were there so I installed this current one which is a Coronet [MIJ stencil brand] until I find "real" one but meanwhile it is 100% functional and very clean yes!

I wouldn't feel too bad about your kit...in fact if I had your kit I would be feeling pretty darn good about it! As long as you're playing not selling, just focus on the gorgeous original wrap already on there, and that great Gretsch sound...and like I say mount something interesting off of that center pole mount, maybe.

You could use a modern Gretsch arm in the Ludwig bracket and then a RIMS mount (or Ludwig Atlas bracket) for the tom so you don't have to drill it.

Something like this...

[ame]http://www.ebay.com/itm/DO-YOU-NEED-THIS-GRETSCH-SINGLE-TOM-HOLDER-for-MOUNTING-YOUR-DRUM-to-SET-G940-/361027168909?pt=US_Drums&hash=item540ee56a8d[/ame]

It wouldn't be original...but it's never going to be original again anyway.

If it were mine I would not re-wrap it.

I would just put it back stock and live with the hole.

You could repair the hole if you like.

What's the name of the guy that does the wrap repair?

I can't remember. Help2

I like K.O.'s idea. You could use the center mount for a tom holder or cymbal arm. The new Catalina Clubs have a single tom holder with cymbal mount.

http://www.gretschdrums.com/?fa=drums&sid=759#features

You can also get the Steve Maxwell Rail Consolette, since it uses the same hole pattern.

http://www.maxwelldrums.com/rail-consolette-holder-complete-p-3745.html

Mount the tom on the rail consolette and a cymbal/arm on the diamond mount. You have a variety of options.

Let us know what you decide and please post pictures.
