Help! Mid 60's Red Sparkle Ludwig 22,13,16

Loading...

When I was about 13 I bought this Ludwig from my neighbor (mowed his lawn 10 times as payment).

A couple people who have seen the kit recently said it's pretty rare and yesterday during Easter dinner my step dad told me that the neighbor who sold the kit to me said it was Don Brewer's (Grand Funk Railroad's) former set.

This prompted me to (skeptically) look into it a bit more and I've seen some you tube clips of him playing a kit that looks similar but the video quality is too poor to confirm.

The mounted tom still has this sticker (the previous owner may have put it on though), so it might be a good way to identify it.

The kit is not in great shape but it's mainly just dirty. I have all the original hardware including kick pedal rims, and even the old zildjians it came with .

I don't know much about vintage drums, so I'd like some help identifying the kit and determining a rough value, and perhaps if it was played by Don Brewer.

Any help or resources would be much appreciated!

That 13 reso edge is a bit tore up. Too much time running naked, I would suspect. You hit it right at about 66-ish. This is a VERY common wrap on a VERY common setup wearing a VERY common sticker of the times. Without anything more solid, I don't believe I'd be calling this SuperClassic kit "the Brewmeister" anytime soon.

... and welcome to the forum!

Yeah the brewer issue is not likely, but I'm more concerned about the value. The shell is pretty dinger up there. How much do these kits run generally?

13inch toms in that condition fetch between 75 and 150. Considering, that's the only pics I see, that's the price I would put on it. If there's a 22 and a 16, pics would need to be posted of those. The damage on the 13 would lead one to speculate damage on the other drums. That will cause the price to plummet, as you would expect. Check ebays completed auctions for both red sparkle and blue sparkle SuperClassic kits. That will give you both top end and bottom end. Because of your damaged shells, yours would be on the bottom end.

Factoring in inflation, I'd estimate that the kit is worth about 14 mowed lawns. You might be able to find someone willing to mow 17 lawns, but that's only if you get a couple of potential buyers in a bidding war...

Set up the whole kit and post some pics and I will have the pics forwarded to Don Brewer and see if he recognizes it. Having the white interior and sticker may help but there may be something about the other drums that could ring a bell or not. I can't remember what his drum sizes were back in the day. I know he used a Ludwig 4 piece red sparkle set up.

Sorry but there is nothing rare about mid 60's Ludwig drums.I believe blue, then red sparkle were two of the most common wraps being sold at the time.If you look in drum forums you will notice we don't use the word "rare "too often. There were thousands of these drums produced back then.Ludwig had a very hard time keeping up with orders for their drums. So they are vintage...not rare.

Don Brewer,in grand funks earlier years played a Ludwig super classic kit with an extra floor tom. 1-9x13 mounted tom,2-16x16 floor toms,1-5x14 metal(supraphonic)metal snare drum, and 1-14x22 bass drum.He used Zildjian cymbals,14"hi hats,18/20"crashes and 20 or 22'ride.

His later Ludwig kits had mach lugs, red sparkle, but i'm not sure about the sizes.

They're not rare, but--aside from the damage to that bearing edge--they are very, very good drums. Classic look and sound. People on the forum can help with advice on how to repair that edge if you're interested. It wouldn't restore the collector's value of the set, but it would make for an excellent player's drum.

1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)
