Heads Do Not Fit

Wellll I ordered some Aquarian 12" vintage drum heads for pre 60's drums for my old 40's Radio king tom. Won't fit. Just a little small. What am I going to do now? The first one they sent me did not fit so thinking they sent me a 60's and above head, I called and they said they would send another and keep the first one. I got 2 in the mail this week.

Nope. won't fit. 13"'s are to large. Idea's anyone? Need some heads?

Well, you could get some calfskin heads and wooden flesh hoops custom made. I did it once for a snare drum I liked. It cost a bunch of money....something along the lines of $120.00!!!!

Is it the flesh hoop that won't fit over the shell? You could take a Dremel tool and grind off some of the interior edge of the flesh hoop, itself, if it's really close to fitting.

or,snap it in half where the metal joins at the seam...........

I have heard of people doing that, and it works!

They are regular type heads. I hate to snap them. I have 3. Maybe I could try it with one. They are metal. Probably would bend and ruin them. Don't want to invest in calfskin heads. I know this tom would sound great. We are talking millimeters here. Wonder if I could stretch the rims from the inside of the heads somehow? There nice heads.

There supposed to fit ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I thought that's what they were made for, this type drum. Maybe I will just put it on ebay. I have the original calfskin heads with it but one has a small little hole and the other is stretched away from the wire some. I don't have the expertise to work on those heads.

Check the head against a normal 12 in modern head, see if the hoop sizes are the same...

IF they are I would assume they still sent you a Modern Vintage series head not an American Vintage series head. Both are for the same sound and look but only American Vintage has the larger hoop diameter.

ALSO- I have a 13 inch Slingerland rack tom (1979) that regular Acquarian heads will not fit on but Remo's fit on just fine. The Acquarian hoop is too wide to fit on it... Sometimes the drums are just odd...

For the older odd size (exactly 14" dia vs 13 7/8") snares; http://www.aquariandrumheads.com/products/vintage-series

They are supposedly made to fit the old snares.

I've never had luck with Aquarians fitting any drum I've owned.

Aquarian hoops are thicker than most. Radio Kings of that era were handmade/built for calfskin heads. So, it stands to reason you may run in to this on some toms. Please keep in mind I don't have the extensive experience with Radio Kings that some of these other members have ... I'm just analyzing the facts and applying logic.

Try a Remo head. They have the thinnest flesh hoop in the industry.

About the Aquarian American Vintage heads: great stuff, but Aquarian's reference point for those heads being oversized by .050" ID is their standard-size heads, and Aquarian's hoop is thicker than most.

I had a similar problem with a late 40's/early 50's Radio King snare. I happened to have a 60's Sonor pancake snare drum nearby. For the hell of it, I switched batter and reso heads for the old Sonor heads on the pancake snare. The Sonor heads fit very nicely on the Radio King snare drum with room to spare. Ironically, the new Aquarian vintage type heads (not modern vintage) fit the Sonor drum very well without being too tight. I have no explanation for this whole event. The mystery fascinates me a few years after it took place.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
