Hello all,

I wonder if anybody can help me date this snare. Looking to sell it, but need to know what I'm selling. It has the baseball bat throwoff, but the baseball bat has snapped off.... bummer.

Pics here. http://imgur.com/a/aUIjn#6

Any help appreciated.

What`s happening guy,

I`m gonna put your "Gretsch Metal Snare Drum/x4160 model from 61 to 64.

Reason is because your snare shows up 1st in the 61 cat with that microsensitive throw-off system and by 64 it was supplied with the newer lightning throw off. Everything else was the same. If the tag inside has a date code, that can nail the exact year.

The Gretsch guys here will be more accurate than me. My Gretsch knowledge is limited.

Looks like a 4160 COB snare to me. Can you post an overall picture of the snare.

I also have one with the Microsensitive strainer. Normally was part of the "Name Band" outfit.

Yours is less common than the one`s with the lightning throw. You can tell the difference in the shell from the knurls that encompass the center of the shell with the lightning throw. The micro. one`s don`t have these knurls.

One on the bay now for $400+ is the lightning throw. It has 48 people watching closely.

You`ll get that for yours with the damaged throw. Over in the UK, you have serious completion with older Dallas made drums. I doubt this is a common brand over there.

Odball is spot on. I picked up my round badge kit with the 4160 snare. After I did my research I found it was early 60's because of the round headed screws, serial numbers and most importantly it had the microsensitive strainer on the 4160 snare.

I would put the value myself at $400 even without the missing part. FWIW you can order a replacement new version of the strainer that fits the same mount pattern (no extra holes) for about $100. That is what I did for mine and since I play it I don't mind that mine has the new strainer.

I also have a 4157 snare with an original microsensitive strainer. I honestly prefer the new version for a drum to play.

I would suggest a slightly different timeline and order of events than has been offered above.

Like your drum, the model 4160 snare initially had no knurling on the shell, a Microsensitive throw and round head screws to mount the lugs.

The knurling was introduced in about 1965/66.

The Microsensitive throw was replaced with the Lightning throw in about 1967.

The round head screws were replaced with hex heads in about 1967/68.

Therefore, your drum would be from prior to about 1965/66 based upon the lack of knurling. Without a paper label displaying a serial number, it is difficult to refine this estimate further.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

The "pukin pigeon" and I have agreed 61/64, just like you did. How`s yours different ?

Ha ha I don't think many people would get that but to set the record straight I was actually in the 82nd ABN DIV aka "All Americans, Alcoholics Anonymous"

What we do know is you have a nice 4160 that I would imagine being in Europe worth more than here stateside. I can't wait to move back to Germany and all my drums go up in value.

Having played a lot of Sonor drums my opinion of the 4160 is that soundwise it's close to the Steve Smith snare. If I had to keep just one drum from my vintage snare collection it would be the 4160.

Growing up I heard it on so many albums so it holds a special place in my collection. I have gigged it just once.
