Can anyone tell me about the 60's/70's Gretsch 4108 aluminum snare?
I cannot really find much info or audio on them. There is a pretty good YouTube video showing 5 aluminum snares side by side but that is about all.
Thanks

The 4108 was an aluminum shell model, with 8 lugs (although a few early 6 lug aluminum shell drums had this model number before it was switched to 4106). It has versions with (model 4108T) and without (model 4108) the tone control. If the tone control is there, it generally has a small adjustment knob. Many have key holders. It received two different throw offs, initially the Renown and then later the "Standard" version.
It appears in the 1971 catalog (http://www.gretschdrums.com/ebooks/1971/index.html?#/37/) as part of a student snare kit, but was available a few years earlier. This drum appears from the later 1960s, through the 1970s and into the 1980s.
Nice snares with a wide tuning range imo. Here's an earlier thread w/a few pics of the first one I got.($40 on CL) Found another one on Reverb that has a better working throwoff.
Thank you for the information gentleman!
I had seen one locally for sale and inquired but never got a response back. After looking a little more closely at the pictures, it looks like it has a Ludwig P85 strainer on it so not being all original and having the extra holes doesn't excite me. I could look past that for the right price or trade however but at $280 is seems a little high?
Wes
Yea $280 seems a lot high. The one I found on Reverb was listed for $200, I offered $150 (was listed for 3 months) and got it. I don't think a lot of guys go looking for them so they're usually on the budget side. Like the song says they go crack, boom, bam, I like 'em.
