Great skill takes from those drums everything they have to offer. I am convinced that he could bring you every bit as good a sound, though possibly a bit different from each, using any well-made set of drums. The benefit Gretsch has over the others is that so many highly skilled players in the jazz idiom have used their drums. Now we associate the two and give a bit more credit to the drums than they actually deserve. It is really the player that has wowed us all with touch, technique, rudiment, control, and stage craft. In short, artistry.

The mic'ing and production on this clip are also top notch. Lots of great kits on youtube that sound dreadful from bad recording. Sometimes the ones with just one condenser sound the best. Like this guy JJ Johns and his Q3HD, "no external mics".

Someone else posted a clip from JJ...or maybe it was me. Anyway I love his inventive pattern-beats...

There you go. Gretsch drums are over credited? Not in my book. As I said the best at that bonky musical tonality there is. Mad sounds. Well to me anyway. You'll see it written, my opinion. Which is in my experience with Gretsch drums. I'm saying nice things. I'm excited. This video oozes that Gretsch-ness. Unique. I'm sure the dude is being inspired by that too.

The guy playing on the vid is course is very good. And of course he could play anything. And of course he has great skills.

Thanks for trying to teach me that my held opinion is worthless and that I know jack about artistry 101.
