Hi,
I've been working with a group of like minded people here in San Diego for the last couple of months on pulling together a Drum Show in the recording studio I own (www.studiowest.com) and we are finally ready to start getting the word out on the San Diego Drum Show and Swap Meet. (www.sddrumshow.com)
Before I go any further, I want to make clear that it's a FREE event. There's no cover charge or fee for anything apart from raffle tickets; we are working with the Jazz Association of Greater San Diego (www.jazz4u.org) to fund a scholarship for a young drummer to go to a Summer Camp this Summer.
The inspiration to do this event sprang from all the amazing knowledge I picked up over the last 2 years on this forum. When I first started planning it I envisaged an event that was focused solely on Vintage Drums, but realized that to broaden the appeal I should open it to the newer stuff also. Hopefully this wont offend any purists on the site!
I know there are other great drum shows out there, but ours is a little different in that it is being held in a top notch studio; we've got three separate rooms and all 8,000 sq ft will be bristling with great kits and drum related events.
In the big room (Studio A) we will have a selection of 12 classic and modern kits. Between the different organizers on the vintage side we've got Ludwig (*2), Slingerland, Fibes, Gretsch, Rogers and Sonor represented. Tama, DW, Pearl and Mapex will be the current brands on display. Attendees will be encouraged to get hands on with these kits and we have separate clinics on such topics as :
- Drum Mic technique (sponsored by Shure and led by Steve Churchyard, a legendary engineer).
- Drum Tuning (by our own teaching professional, Simon Das Gupta of www.sandiegodrumlessons.com)
- Performance Demos by some amazing local drummers; Bill Ray, Chris Bailey and Rick Stojak.
- A chance for people to try and play to a click on one of our studio kits.
- Sabian are sending a member of their Sound Team to demo a load of their cymbals.
- We are setting up 15-20 classic and boutique snares in Studio B where people will be able to play them and vote on their favorites.
We are also combining this with a Swap Meet, which we will be holding in the parking lot behind the studio. We are charging vendors a modest $20 fee to lock in a space, and hope to get around 20 vendors. I'm excited to see what good stuff there might be to buy!
We are involving many local teachers and professionals, and have been able to secure sponsorship from a lot of companies, small and large. It should be a great day and we hope to inspire some young drummers and just spend the day with like minded folks.
Thanks for your time and hope to see some of you there!
Regards,
Peter Dyson
