Buying vintage Ludwig

Hey guys,

I found this on eBay and think I'm going to buy it. However he's asking for $1500 plus shipping and I'm from Aus. Is this a fair price for what it is?

Not such a good deal, I bought a 12,14,20 in silver sparkle a few years ago for $1,000, now that was a good deal.

yeah, those are a bit high, even tho' they're '64's---nice mahogany insides. It's really all in the details---if there's extra holes, scuffs, pitting, seam lift, etc. They look a little yellowed--not necessarily a deal-breaker.

Before you buy anything, check into shipping to Australia--pretty sure it's real high. And this seller might be a great guy, but he doesn't have much history on Ebay--which is about all we have to go on, unless you buy from someone on the forum--i'd say we're all pretty fair guys in general.........marko

Hey guys,

I won the bid and he said all up including shipping to Australia it's only going to be $1450.

How can I tell though if these are actually 64's?

He gave me these serial numbers.

the tom is 15573 the floor tom is 17685 and the bass drum is19340

Can someone please let me know if this is legit or not before I spend that money.

The eBay link is in a few posts up.

Cheers

it seems to me that if you won the auction you bought the drums. Are the badges original? And badge numbers certainly don't guarantee year of manufacture. Hope you like 'em!!

Seems pretty legit to me. I just sold my '63 Ludwig Super Classic and I had the same 1st generation classic mounts for rack tom, cymbal arm, floor tom legs and bass drum spurs. 5-digit serial numbers indicate '64...and the placement of the air vent/badge in the middle of the floor tom is also correct. Ludwig moved the placement of the floor tom vent/badge up towards the top hoop some time in '65 or '66, I think. For the price you paid to have it shipped to Australia, I say you didn't do too bad! Congrats!

Nice kit and it seems like a good price? $1,450 for kit and shipping to Australia. Don't forget to add import tax as well. Not sure what it is, but as soon as its over the $1,000 mark......they slug you!
