Buddy Rich

I've never seen Buddy Rich playing a Slingerland kit in this finish and minus a second floor tom.

I was able to get in touch with the moderator, and he was able to satisfy your request to please DELETE the double post. That said...

... this clip is from a PBS Jazz Series called "Mark of Jazz" hosted by Sid Marks in the mid 70's. This particular show took place in Philadelphia, PA with Buddy and his then NEW septet, although he is playing with a quintet in this clip. Buddy had just disbanded his big band and opened "Buddy's Place" in NY. So... Buddy headlined at his own club of course!.. ( although he did bring in other acts as well ) .. and his usual Slingerland set in WMP was most probably set up in the NY club. Reason I say that is, after much research over the years on this clip/period, and the fact that this particular Slingerland set/finish was not seen again.. ( although it could have been used again somewhere ) .. it was most certainly a "backline" set for Buddy to play supplied by a local Slingerland dealer in Philadelphia for this show. Interestingly, with enough lead time, "backline" sets for Buddy could be supplied with his signature shield/logo on the front head. Take note too, that besides being a different wrap, it is a four piece... missing the 2nd 16X16 floor tom. This happened frequently with "backline" sets for Buddy!

I'm surprised that Slingerland couldn't supply another wmp kit, I mean it was Buddy Rich. You would had thought he would have had several wmp kits at his disposal at any time he might need one.

Didn't always happen that way I'm afraid. It was contingent on what the Slingerland dealer in the area HAD at the time. I have seen MANY sets that were NOT WMP supplied to BR over the years... and just as many that were NOT the brand he was endorsing at the time as well. On the flip side, yes... he was also supplied with his signature set/color many times too. It just all depended on what was available. Now...

... there are a couple more clues that the set in the clip was "backline"... some are subtle, but a BR FREAK would spot 'em! Wanna play?

Thanks for the education Tommy. impressive as usual.

While we're on the topic of Buddy, can you (or others) suggest the definitive book about his career/life? I am ashamed to say I know little about him. Thanks.

larryz!

There are a few books out there on BR... actually more than a few, as I have them all. That said though, the ONE that really comes closest in it's approach/facts, is the one written by Buddy's good friend, Mel Torme. It's called "Traps The Drum Wonder". It is out of print I believe.. but! .. can be found easily enough on eBay. I have seen many copies come up for sale. It's a great read!, and whereas Mel wrote this with input from Buddy himself!, there are some areas that are so-so factually... but not enough to take away from an excellent rendering of/about Buddy Rich. I should have written the chapter on Buddy's drums/hardware/endorsements.. ( and I mean that with all due respect to Mel! ) .. as he does miss the mark on a lot of it, but it is indeed an excellent read!

Looks as if the toms are even larger, say 14 and 18 and the bass possibly deeper at, say, 16x24". Tilters on the ride and splash (his cymbals always seemed to be dead level.

Johnnyringo: Ringo's too easy. Photos up the wazu to help. :)

... and truth be told, I have ALWAYS been a fan of Ringo! Me, like so many others of my age, credit Ringo/The Beatles with getting us into drums in the first place! Three years after that I was introduced to BR.. ( 1967 ) .. and well... it's never stopped. It has also led to DECADES of research, collecting, LIVE performances, etc., all having to do with Buddy. So, I say the same: I wouldn't get into a Ringo "minutiae contest" with you!
