Bought an Acrolite today, very impressive.

From al9000

I'm interested in eventually acquiring one, but it's a want more than a need.I like the look of the black ones ... are there any sound differences or is it purely cosmetic?

I pulled the string on an eBay blackrolite with some Christmas cash. Just got it and I love it. Super crisp! I'm looking forward to trying it out with the band.

I think I'd like to continue using Ludwig heads on it. It has a heavy coated Rockers head on it now ... is that the same as a Weathermaster?

Suggestions, please, on vendors as well.

One thing that I don't think people realize is just how versatile the Acrolite is. I'm a drum tech for an arena artist and the guy I take care of happens to be a Ludwig endorser. The main snare is my 20's heavy brass two piece 5x14 (with the single flanged hoops). I've got it cranked up with a coated Emperor and it sounds great. BUT...snare two is my 70's Acrolite. He wanted to also have a ballad snare, so I put a Remo coated Powerstroke 4 on top with Puresound 12 strand Equalizer snares underneath and tuned it waaaaay down (hardly any tension at all. Some tension rods are barely in). Didn't touch it for all of the 80 shows, in fact, and got more compliments on that drum than the main snare. It sounded huge, deep and fat through the PA. By far everyone's favorite drum of the two.

I also just re worked one to be the back up to the main drum. I bought the shell on eBay and had it powder coated. It was supposed to be Tony Williams Yellow but turned out gold. I got all new parts (including Imperial lugs) and it looks great.
