Black Beauty Hardware?

Does the hardware on this BB look original? I've never seen one with chrome plated hardware. The owner of this BB wants to sell but has not said how much he wants for it yet.

I`m not a huge Ludwig fan, But I am a Mike Curotto fan and that drum looks all together to me !!

The small tube lugs mounted close to the crimp, the engraveing (with Ludwig), and strainer all look fine and functional. I believe he said these are from the twenties and thirties and are the first BB`s. If it had longer tubes and the pegs were away from the crimp more, I`d say SuperLudwig but that there`s a complete BB !!

I don`t mind being graded, so when others chime in, I`ll see how I did !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I agree, it does look to be a mid 20's BB. I did a little research and I'm sure the shell is right but I can't find a pic of a BB with chrome plated hardware. I'm wondering if someone pulled the hardware off another drum and made a franking Beauty...but hey, what I know about BBs can be written on the head of a pin so you're probably right.

I have a brass item from the early 70`s, when I bought it, it looked like brass, color and all. I`ve done nothing to it but it now looks chrome plated !!

Evidently Ludwig started Chrome plating shells & hardware c. 1929-30. Announced in the literature, Chrome became an option in the Ludwig 1932 catalog. The 2 piece shell was made until c.1930, & then a different shell & engraving pattern was created by Conn.

The scroll pattern on the shell would suggest this drum was made before 1926

I've seen scroll BB's with chrome parts before. Not unusual.

Wich would make it a Delux but the lugs thing is interesting !!

They went for less than $50 brand new so don`t expect to pay alot for it !!

In my opinion the chrome hardware is after market...1. Chrome was not around in the early-mid 1920s...2. The strainer is definitely later, mostly because of the thumbscrew section and mainly the gut piece as the area with the holes would have been parallel to the drum (floor) on the strainer that is supposed to be on that drum...3. The shell looks good though...can't tell if there are any extra holes etc...4. The hardware can be restored to the original Artgold but the strainer needs to be replaced, all this if the drum is going to be brought back to original...if it's going to be played then just play it and worry about the restoration at another time...FYI: I can make that drum look original, I do that type of restoration...if interested you can reach me at: mike@curottodrums.com or 650-595-2022 PST.
