Great advice. However, it's just the snare that's too loud, not the cymbals, toms or bass. Striking them with similar technique produces a much louder sound from the supra than from any tom.

Then vary your technique! Do you know the exercise where you play (at the same time)

Right foot - bass

Right hand - ride

Left foot - hi hat

Left hand - snare

With a metronome, you play all parts, then cycle an accent through the limbs- first accent RH (ride), then RF, then LH, then LF. All the while, focus on the relative volume of each other part. It will help develop more control.

Try Remo Zero rings,they work very well,or if you have an old drum head around,just cut a circular ring out of it about 1 1/8 wide and just lay it on your snare.It cuts volume without sacrificing tone.
