Band members say the Supra is too LOUD! Last viewed: 3 days ago

Maybe it's our practice space, but the crack put out by my supra is loud. What (if anything) can be done to tone this thing down a bit? I'm using a coated Remo Weathermaster head and puresound wires. Would a thinner head help?

Thanks

jim

the supra is commonly used for jazz and quieter pop music. maybe it's a combination of your sticks and technique? or maybe it's the small space? moongels help to dry out the sound too...

Jim: have you tryed to detune the heads and snares. lighter sticks, and back off on the rimshots. just a thought........ s/m

I'd echo what the other are saying; de-tune, watch the rim shots... but offer those old dudes some ear plugs!

Or experiment with Hot Rods or Blasticks on some tunes. Sometimes I'll use rods at practice and sticks on the gig. The Supra can be subtle. If your bandmates are asking for lower volume, chances are, the audience will too.

Thanks- I'll be working on the tuning, but also picked up some Vic Firth Tala Wands. These look like a typical multi-rod stick, but have a foam center core. They feel great and may be just the ticket for the small practice space.

Jim, I'm old-school... back in the day, if we wanted to 'tone it down', we'd lay our wallet on the snare drum. You also might try a towel.

Don't laugh, it may not look pretty, but it works!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

You might try what musicians do when they are too loud. PLAY quieter!!!

It's interesting that when you hit harder it's louder and when you hit lighter it's not as loud. MAGIC!!!

Great advice. However, it's just the snare that's too loud, not the cymbals, toms or bass. Striking them with similar technique produces a much louder sound from the supra than from any tom. just sayin'

You also might try a towel.

Tried that today and it actually helped quite a bit.
