Another old Gretsch drum arrived today

I bought this drum a few weeks ago on eBay and it arrived today.

The photos are all from the eBay ad page.

A SSB#1 8x12 tom with a serial number indicating it was made in the first 300-400 drums.

The owner bought it from a friend in 1970 and his friend said he bought it a year or so before that. It's good to have this information - I like it when I know where a drum has been.

The wrap has been altered to make heads fit properly but a little too much was cut away. One of the die-cast hoops is missing and a flanged hoop has been added.

I haven't even looked at it much but what I see I like. It's a nice addition to my growing Gretsch orphanage.

Ha, haa! I was watching that one (with no intent to buy). Glad it went to a good home. I just gotta find a SSB#1, 12" walnut tom!

Enjoy!

Vibes - if it wasn't a Gretsch I would consider it but I have to hang onto this one for a while - at least until That Great Gretsch feel has sunk in a little more.

I cleaned the parts and took the glue residue off the exposed wood shell at both heads. Too bad the finish had been cut down so much - kind of ruins the overall look. But, that is part of the history of the drum now and there's no turning back. I'm good with it because this is a very nice little drum. I put a clear Gretsch (feels like a G2 maybe) on the reso head and a Permatone on the batter....nice tone.

From Reported Dating of Serial #'s in Richard Gier's Gretsch dating book - ISBN 978-1-888408-15-7 (Table 9. pg 31) my drum may have been made in the last quarter of 1969. But this is just an educated guess on my part.

Does anyone here know: Is this normal for a grommet to come from the factory like this?

This drum was made within the first few years of the Baldwin Gretsch ownership (67-84).
