All About Hal...

Another quote I really liked from Hal Blaine.. "I'm an accompanist, I've never been a soloist.. the key word for drummers is-- LISTEN"I have always liked that accompanist approach to drumming ala golden-ager Dave Tough.. don't get me wrong Krupa and Rich AMAZING!! But for me accompanist just feels right.

Krupa and Rich played Jazz ALL the time, where everybody serves as an accompanist most of the time, and their solos are improvised. Also, they were bandleaders, and extended solos were expected. It's fine that Hal Blaine isn't a soloist and for most of the stuff he's done, one isn't required. I don't think he was dissing people that were soloist. That said, I like that approach as well, and prefer that solos be short. You don't need several minutes to display your skills.

From Purdie Shuffle

Guys... go easy.Kook gives every appearance of being a young guy with strong beliefs about what he likes and doesn't like. I've been reading his posts when he starts a thread. Like all of us, he's learning. Kind of using us and the forum like a lab to fling some poop at the walls just to see what sticks. But it's a learning process and I think he's learning. Two weeks ago, Kook would have verbally gutted you if you even suggested that Hal Blaine ghosted for Dennis Wilson. Now, he's acknowledging Hal's contribution. The man is now showing that he learned something!Go easy. Room for everyone to learn and grow here. Bunch of old fahrts around here anyway, don't want to blow off any young bloods that show up. They're the next generation.John

I know Hal Blaine played on a lot of Beach Boys sessions but Dennis still did a lot of the drumming as well, and Earl Palmer. Hal did all the drumming on Pet Sounds, most of if not all the drumming for Smile and a lot of the drumming in 64-65 but I reiterate so did Dennis!

I'm not trying to start any crap, I'm just showing some enthusiasm cuz most young drummers nowadays don't!

A lot of this Hal vs. Dennis stuff seems to centre around, whether Dennis Wilson was a good enough drummer to do the job and since he seemed to pull it off on stage, he clearly was. He was also a tragic figure, deeply troubled ,as the whole family was. He clearly was capable of playing the repertoire but was he available, for the studio sessions? Not, likely, there were other things happening. I would think that he was unreliable, that was his major fault and the albums had to be made, irregardless.

Hal was utilized a little in 63 but that was mostly Dennis, then more in 64-5, on pretty much all of Pet Sounds 'sept maybe one song, he was used for Smile and Friends. Dennis played on Sunflower, and from 1976 onward til he was too ****ed up.
