'68 Luds

Loading...

Hi all,

I've been searching for a while now for an original 60's Ludwig in Oyster Black.

There is a fellow selling a kit in the Toronto area, not the configuration I desire, but all in all a nice set.

The sizes are 12/13/16 with a 20" kick. As far as he knows they are original. He bought them from the U.S. some time ago and they appear to be in very good condition.

Not fussy on the double tom mount, but I could certainly fly the 12" off a snare stand, but then the 16" floor would maybe seem out of place? Did Ludwig offer this configuration with a 20" kick?

He's asking $1650 cdn for them, but says he may be flexible on price.

The serial numbers are all in the late 61000 to early 62000 series.

Any input on condition and asking price would be appreciated

Cheers

Phil

m very skeptical about that 20 inch bd , it should be a 22 in bd now im not saying it could not be done, but, that kit seems familiar and looks like its been around the o'l auction block before , it is a rare color but i think the drums are over priced as it is the kit if im right has been a hard sell it was a fee bay and cl, if there are no cracks or mods that translate to 900 or so us dollars the ft and 2 hang toms would be worth that... so good luck

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Maybe its my old eyes but in the photo 1 and 3 its looks like a wrap patch where a console mount might have been. Cld be a reflection, but I would want a close look.

IF its not really what you want then I would wait. Sounds like maybe you want a downbeat size kit?

I had a Ludwig 70's BDP kit that had a 20" kit and 13", 14", 16" toms. The 14" was a 10x14 ride. The kit matched to well to not be original. Ludwig just did some funky stuff occasionally. Grabbed what was left around the factory I guess to get product out. Or a special order possibly.

I see what you mean, but I think it is a reflection, possibly of the rack tom above. Don't think it's a patch because the Oyster lines seem to match up all the way through.

Ah well, I'm going to see them this week and that will tell all.

Thanks for your comments folks

Well, I did go and see the kit yesterday, and to be honest, as soon as I was led down to the basement area and saw the kit sitting there, I think my jaw must have hit the ground! They were better than i could ever have hoped for. The condition is staggering.

Apart from a couple of very small indentation lines on the rear of the 12" tom, likely from the snare, they are almost mint.

The chrome has little or no pitting or rust at all, in fact if it wasn't for a couple of tiny blemishes, I'd swear they were brand new.

The inside of the shells are all date stamped from August and September 1968, and in perfect condition.

My main concern was that it was going to be a re-wrapped kit. The wrap is bang on what Ringo's looks like, and has a beautiful silvery-grey tone along with the black. I still have a nagging fear of it being a re-wrap, but i don't belive there's any material out there that comes this close to the original. Plus, there is no evidence of any badges being removed, and the wrap is absolutely perfectly seated on the shell, with no bubbling or lifting. I did take the heads off and I'm not sure if the wrap is imbedded in the scarf joint or not.

I was shocked when I got home and compared the 13" tom with the same from my Legacy (Vintage Oyster Black). The Legacy tom is not even close to the original. From a distance yes, but has waaayyy too much blue in it.

Anyway, here's some pics after setting it up in the configuration that will be mostly used....Beatle Tribute Band.

I really think I got a steal at $1600....oh, and he also threw in a 1960's Speed King pedal in awesome condition!

Cheers

What did the seller say when you asked if it was a rewrap? The wrap looks original to me but... Yeah an OBP is a holy grail. That 20" bass does have me wondering but super sweet looking kit.

As far as he knew they were original as was told to him when he bought them up from the States. I guess I just had my suspicions because they were in such great condition.

The 20" bass was actually what I was looking for as I already have a Legacy kit in the Super Classic sizes. I would have preferred a 14" floor tom to complete the look, but the 16" will have to do.

If anyone has a 14" in OBP I'd be interested tho.

I think by 1968 or so (probably when they switched to maple) Ludwig was no longer imbedding the wrap in the scarf joint, so if it looks original, then it probably is.

BTW, cool kit...the condition looks to be impeccable! I'm always happy to see a fellow VDF member stoked on a new acquisition.
