60's Slingy 12/14/20 w/snare Last viewed: 3 seconds ago

Ok. So I have the chance to get what appears to be a gold Niles badge 12/14/20 with matching zig-zag lug snare in WMP from a guy. Kick drum has been altered for a double tom mount and new (I think) spurs. But other than that it's great. One crack in the finish under a bass drum lug. BUT I have to drive 4 hrs to get it (which is nothing I tour 6 mo's out of the year) but he only wants $350....

What - do - I - do...

I will offer as much as I can on this kit. I believe the snare is a Buddy Rich model and the set is from the 70s (looks like black/silver badges and 70s Ts on the BD). Not sure about the tom mount because I can't see it, but the spurs look like Slingerland from the late 80s or early 90s. That being said, I believe it may be possible that this kit could be from the mid-80s and the hardware could be correct. Check for date stamps in the shells and/or check the serial numbers against the timeline in VDG.

The shells and chrome look nice. If you can get past the tom mount and knowing that the spurs aren't era correct (if that is the case), $350 isn't too bad.

Now you have my :2Cents:. I hope it's helpful to you.

The BD looks like it might be 18".

A friend pointed out to me that the wing screws on the FT leg brackets are the same as those on the spurs. This means late 80s/early 90s. My friend also pointed out that the snare is worth about as much as the asking price of the kit.

Go get it!

From Rocketman

The BD looks like it might be 18".

I believe you're right. Should be a 4x14 snare, looks like probably 12" rack, 14" FT, and a couple inches on either side of the FT makes the BD an 18.

Cool1

Shame on me for not doing my research! It is indeed an early 90's HSS artist series kit with the SAD144 offset lug snare drum. I will probably part out the SD since I will be using this as a practice kit. If it was a 3-ply shell I'd be way more into it but - I'm sorry - I'm kinda partial to the sound of the 3-ply's vs. the 6,8,10ply maple shells. Thanks for all your help! I may just sell the kit as a whole or trade towards another if someone is just dying for this kit. I really just need a good practice kit. Anyhow, now to make the transaction happen!

I would give $350 for that set in a heartbeat. I am sure a lot of jazz guys would love to have that kit in those sizes. Looks 12" 14" 18" to me too?

The snare is nice. Compared to a Gretsch Jazz Catalina set of which I own and absolutely love. I don't see you going wrong with that set.
