50s Leedy & Ludgwig kit? Last viewed: 14 hours ago

Hi everyone. I have a friend who is wondering about his dad's old Leedy/Ludwig kit (see photos). He asked me what he's got and if it's worth restoring, and since I don't know a lot about vintage drums, I'm putting it out to you. I don't know what kind of shape the bearing edges are in and all of that fun stuff. All I know is that it dates from the early 50s, but that's about it. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Look through the hole in the L+L badge. The year and month are sometimes stamped inside the shell, across from the badge side.

As you may have already worked out the bass drum is a Sonor. Sonor have recently released a vintage style line that uses that badge. I know nothing about them except they are pretty spendy. Your friend's is an original 50s (?) drum and probably quite desirable

Bassdrum looks like a very early Teardrop style Drum! It´s probably metric!

Very cool and rare piece of Drum even here in Europe!

Thanks for the input, eveyone! Yeah, the Sonor badge threw me initially. I don't know where the kit was purchased (whether it was pieces thrown together or what have you). I know it was my friend's dad's kit when he was young and those L&L badges are definitely early 50s. What else should we be looking for?

The kit was thrown together. The rack tom looks to me like it is a Slingerland Radio King tom from the 40's. There probably isn't a badge or vent hole on that drum. That would lead me to assume that the snare drum is the Leedy & Ludwig? That would definitely be early 1950's. I can't comment on the age of the Sonor bass drum. They are all worth restoring, however, they will not be worth much as a kit since they are all different makes. If your friend is looking to sell, he'll probably be better of selling the drums individually. If he wants to keep them for sentimental reasons, then monetary value goes out the window.

Thanks again, everyone. My friend hasn't decided what he's going to do yet - I think the sentimental value trumps all at this point. The info is much appreciated!
