I happened to get together with a few "drummer friends" yesterday as we were celebrating my son's 25th birthday. As usually happens, several friendly discussions broke out regarding the subject of vintage drums. One such conversation was about whether a Ludwig Downbeat kit (minus snare) with four extra factory-drilled holes for a 2nd rail consolette would yield a higher ROI than an uncompromised Ludwig Super Classic kit (minus snare), all other factors (year, wrap, cosmetic & functional conditions, etc.) being the same.

There were definitely two distinct schools of thought -- The first favored the Downbeat kit, despite the extra factory-drilled holes, due mainly to the highly valued and hard-to-find 14" floor tom. The second group consisted of the "no holes" guys, who believed the unmolested Super Classic would be the kit of choice. Lots of banter back and forth on this one. Just thought I'd check in with the "experts" for some feedback!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I'll take an original over a players grade any day, Sans the 14" floor tom from the downbeat kit. I'm a heavy loud player so a downbeat is not my thing anyway! except as a sales item.

This is in response to the original post. I'm not responding to any other poster here. Please don't read this as if it's directed at anything other than the original intent.

Luddy 14 floors are not at all rare. They are somewhat ubiquitous and fairly easily obtained. I've sold three in the past couple of years and didn't pay over 200 for any of them. (Slingerland 14's are priced about the same and are just a tad more difficult to locate)

The current ebay market is a serious joke and has lost most all credibility as a marker for value.

The SuperClassic would command more money. Extra holes equals MUCH lower value ... except the ULTRA-rare kits.

"Rare" and "Vintage Drum" are two terms that have been married and thrown out with much vim and vigor. They honestly should not be used together much at all. Most Vintage Drums are not at all rare and for those that understand the market ... are not too difficult to obtain (unless you run into the pseudo market bubble that plagues it from time to time and refuse to pay the silly high prices slapped on by ignorant schmucks who think themselves business moguls).

If Ludwig drilled the Downbeat,..Why would that make it a players grade ? I would think it would make it unique !!

.....as do most guys that age! The "vintage drum discussion" took place among the "older guys" at the get together.
