What modern kit would you choose ? Last viewed: 2 days ago

I've had a lot of wood kits and a Ludwig Stainless Steel kit. But I've never had fiberglass. I'm very curious about Jenkins-Martin in "Bonham" rock sizes and Blaemire Green.

From green glass drum

+1, JM Drums.Don't know if they make a 26" BD yet.

From red66charger

On second thought, 'Bonham-esque' sizes. All 5'6" of me would be better suited for a 24". 24/13/16/18 would be about right!

No, J-M doesn't offer a 26" bass drum........but the 24's are definitely "Bonhamesque"!

If I get two dream kits I would go for two Gene D'Amico sets, one 14x20 8x12 14x14 and the other two 14x22 8x12 9x13 14x14 and 16x16.

1971 Ludwig Rock Duo set in Blue Oyster Pearl
early Mapex dual bass drum Saturn kit
1964 Leedy Ray  Mosca kit in Blue Sparkle
1959 Slingerland Super Gene Krupa snare in WMP
1968 Slingerland Hollywood Ace Snare Drum
1969 and 1977 Ludwig 400 Supraphonic snares
1965 Acrolite snare
Ludwig Coliseum snare
'68 Rogers Dynasonic snare
Pearl free floating piccolo snare
13" Mapex piccolo snare
6.5" deep Mapex steel snare
Mapex 6.5" Brass snare
I know there's more snares than that.
UFIP cymbals / Avedis Zildjians
Ghost pedals or Tama King Beats

Another vote for J-M. A nice bop kit would definitely be nice. I'd love to see if they could do glass hoops all around.

What defines 'one kit'?

Can I say I want a kit that has 10x7, 12x8, 13x9, 14x10 and 15x11 rack toms, 14x14, 15x15, 16x16, 18x16 and 20x16 floors, 20x14, 22x14, 22x18, 24x14, 26x14, 28x14 and 28x20 kick drums, plus 13x5, 13x7, 14x4, 14x5, 14x6.5, 14x8 and 15x5 matching snares plus 14x5 and 14x6.5 snares in aluminium, brass, bronze and (stainless) steel?

Probably have to be DW to get all the sizes but I could probably handle that.

To be honest I saw a kit made from tree stock, Luca drums he was next to me at drum show , great sounding drums .... Nice looking too

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I would have Ray Ayotte build me a kit............RAYA drums.......12x18bd (or maybe a 10x18bd) /6x10 tom/ 11x13 floor tom and 4.5x13 one piece snare - all with wood hoops with matching finish inlays. I'd have to think more on the type of finish. I maybe would alter the above sizes if I chose to have a 'nesting' kit.

2nd choice

A modern Gretsch Broadkaster in the smallest sizes (18/12/14) in Vintage Pearl wrap and the Vintage buildout.

This thread has turned out to be a great one.. Very interesting.. If i may go against my own rules i put on this thread of choosing just 2 kits, i'm gonna throw in one more that i would definitely love to own and have customized, and that would be a drum kit by L.A. based Drum Co. Q Drums.. Some of the stuff these guys are coming out with is incredible, and aesthetically appealing.. I don't know what finish or shell construction i'd get , but the possibilities are endless with those guys..

+1 on this. Their copper kits sound amazing and are great to play.

I'd go for a custom kit.. 12,14,16,18,24... probably Silver Sparkle..

Roundover edges and traditional lugs (not these later lightweight tube lugs)... and stick saver style rims

Builder would be either Mlasko, Chicago (Moritz), or (if from Oz) Metro Drums..

(Spotted a nice old school Mlasko kit on GMA this morning with Adam Lambert) nice

Cheers

John
