Some wore-out drums! Last viewed: 4 hours ago

These drums look completely fantastic! Your dad is going to LOVE them. What are you doing about a tom mount? You had mentioned that your dad did not like the rail mount.

I went with a completely different bass drum. Like I posted earlier, the 22" WFL was just too bad shape to resurrect. Plus dad always wanted a 24. So I started with a '70's Slingy 24" 5 ply shell, (picture of this shell earlier on this thread), got some Slingy bass hardware and a Setomatic single tom set-up from a forum member. The shell needed some work; wrap removal, lot of extra/incorrect holes & such. But then, (after I busted my butt sanding-off the wrap glue, lol), I found a early 60's, pre-serial # blk/gold Slingerland 24" natural finnish, 3 ply Mahogany concert bass drum on eBay. Completely virgin. I installed a pair of spur mounts on it, but I could not bring myself to drill this nice shell for the Setomatic base. So now the rack tom is getting a RIMS type suspension mount to hang it on a cymbal stand.

That is great. If he doesn't like it you can always add a tom mount. What a great gift for your dad.

Well. Finally got the floor tom shell inner ply repaired. The suspension mount showed-up Friday. Now dad's kit is about completed!

Here are some pics with a few of my cymbals & my '58 RK snare. Dad's got a '62 RK just like it. I'm gonna tune on em a little more and present them to him on Father's Day. I put Ambassador X batters on the toms. I not too impressed :(. I think I gonna try some regular Coated Ambassadors. Man, this 24" bass sounds killer! Evans Coated EQ3 on front and Clear EMAD batter.

Summary: 13” Rack Tom: shell sanded inside & out. Clear shellac inside, Blue-White Marine Pearl wrap outside & bearing edges cut by Precision Drum, (outstanding work!). Cleaned/polished lugs and t-nuts with new felts. Re-Chromed hoops, & tension rods. New stainless repro t-rod washers from JP2 Creations. Re-zinc plated lug mounting screws/washers. Era correct tone control. Gilbralter Suspension mount with Noble/Cooley “Cool Mount”. Clear Diplomat reso & Coated Ambassador X Batter.

16” Floor Tom: Shell sanded inside & out. Took some extra sanding inside to remove most of the dents & scratches from dad packing the rack tom inside. Precision Drum trued the shell for me and repaired the re-rings that where practically falling off. I repaired/reglued the inside ply of almost the entire inner ply that had de-laminated. I then had Precision Drum cut the bearing edges (the lower one was totally beat-up) and install the Blue/White Marine Pearl wrap. Sprayed several coats of Clear Shellac the inside of shell. Lugs & t-nuts cleaned & polished-up. Installed new felts behind springs. NOS cob hoops I got a killer deal on. New stainless repro t-rod washers from JP2 . Re-zinc plated the lug mounting screws/washers. Re-chromed the legs & push-button lugs. Repaired the push-button lugs to hold rock-solid. I used stainless button head screws for push-buttons, (polished-up, they look great). New repro rubber leg tips. Era correct tone control, cleaned-up. Clear Diplomat reso & Coated Ambassador X batter.

24” bass drum: It's a early 60’s, pre-serial #, blk/gold badge concert bass drum I found on Ebay. The virgin 3-ply mahogany natural finish shell was in perfect condition! Took minimum prep before Precision Drum installed Blue/White Marine Pearl wrap. Clear shellac spray coatings on the inside. I installed a pair of spur mounts I acquired from a forum member, they cleaned-up real nice. The hardware was pretty beat-up and the hoops did not have inlay grooves. So, I bought a pair of new maple hoops w/grooves from Precision, sanded & painted them and installed the BWMP inlays myself. I re-chromed the lugs, claws & t-handle rods. Cleaned/polished the t-nuts. Re-zinc plated the lugs mounting screws. New stainless repro t-rod washers from JP2. I installed the personalized shield decal (dad’s initials of course) & repro “Slingerland” logo on the reso head. I also installed dad’s rechromed Slingy cymbal mount from his old WFL bass drum. I'll post some more pics in a couple of weeks when I get em set-up at dad's house.

Yeah, it's a fairly new 24" Paiste Rude Mega Ride. It's got a realy nice defined ping that cuts through the mix with minimum wash. Helluva bell too!
